what you mean is that the anchor will be displayed beneath the image for the user even though the code is placed before the image and also that clicking on the image will actually be like clicking on the anchor since its size includes the image???

Brilliant, it will also give more "engagement credit" to the anchor instead of splitting it (actually ppl usually clicking on the image).

By the way, do you put all of your products on the page as H3?

We have an e-commerce website and the category pages are built so that there is a product image and below it there is the title. Both the image and the title are in a href (each on its own).

I encountered the following unfinished discussion here at MOZ:

The discussion states that its improper.

The question is - if it is wrong then why? (maybe because Google will give its weight to the image anchor instead of the text anchor since it is higher in the page).

The other question is how to resolve the matter?
Should I add nofollow to the image href?

Firstly, I wondered if there are any news about this discussion...

Secondly, I wondered why it matters.
Is it because Google will consider only the first link from page A to B?
If that is the case (assuming you can't change the look and feel of the site) won't adding nofollow to the image link will solve the problem?

Bob, your question is irrelevan "How do you get enough links without including some directories" because today it's ALL about quality and not quantity.

Now on a different note based on my experience. We did lots of directories way back and many of them show in the WMT as if they are pointing hundreds of links to my site. These sites are very simple and made to the point of links, they don't use rels properly (next, prev, canonical etc.) so Google thinks I have cross sites links from them - I only want to remove these links these days... Only use directories that you think are serious.

To be honest, I don't get why to do that.

I'd get the best article on my site, rewrite it (not spinning) and publish the simpler rewritten version.

I believe that also the rewritten version shouldn't be used more than a couple of times. I think that the best practice would be to have the distributed articles point out to your on site article as the source of information but don't do too many of these.

In my e-commerce site in each product page I have the breadcrumbs on top which show the root categories  that lead to this product.

However, I saw once that Google even if you use several anchors from page A to page B Google treats only/mainly the first anchor.

This means that inserting contextual links on the product text, the product description, that leads to the category page (which is an important landing page) is irrelevant/ambiguous since the link is already in the breadcrumb on top.

What do you think?

Should I insert contextual links on the item description or is it worthless?

I once read that htm files are considered stronger (SEO wise) than aspx files and I wondered if that is correct.

Obviously, I mean the static part of aspx files for example making my about us page in htm and not aspx. Among the advantages of aspx is the usage of a master page (a template) for the design etc.

What I recently decided to do (and I wonder what you think of it), is putting "similar available products" on the non existing product with links to the other products.

However, consider the fact that the non existing product is actually non reachable (since it is not available the product category pages don't point to it) so eventually it will be de-indexed.

I will then add two related questions -

1. Should such related articles that I will use mostly for branding, likes and basically authority be posted in my Blog or Article section?

2. Egol - Don't you feel that putting ads in such article "hurts" your brand?
(making it appear to be smaller - you won't see ads on GAP etc.)

I'm maintaining an e-commerce website and I've encountered some related keywords that I know will not convert to sales but are related to the subject and might help becoming an "authority".

I'll give an example...

If a car dealership wrote an amazing article about cleaning a car.
Obviously it is related but the chances of someone looking to clean his car will go ahead and buy one now are quite low. Also, he will probably bounce out of this page after reading the piece.

To conclude, Would such an article do GOOD (helping to become an authority and having more visitors) or BAD (low conversion rate and high bounce rate)?

Lately you see more and more JQuery slides in pages.
These banner slides can obviously contain html texts & links as well as photos.

Does Google notice all of the texts in all of the slides of a page or does it notice only the first slide or alternatively somehow splits the weight it gives to the texts among the various slides.

What about redirecting internally from a non-existing product in a store to a new similar existing product?

The thing is that we didn't hire "professionals" until we were very highly ranked and were "busy" of work and had to outsource it. We tried several companies and freelancers and within a couple of months stayed only with the best one but it seems that the damage was done.

I always thought that what they did can't hurt me but rather won't do any good.

Otherwise, what prevents me from hire these guys to "promote" my competitors?
Who knows, maybe someone did it to me?

Hi All,

While trying to grow we used several freelancers and small companies for guest blogging, article submissions etc.

We lost about 90% of traffic from our peek at December.

We don't know if it is related but we got the following message last week:
"Google Webmaster Tools notice of detected unnatural links to www.domain.com"

Is it related (getting this message after two months of losing traffic)?

What to do????

(P.S
We fired most of the companies we used months ago since we noticed they used bad methods. We didn't believe it can hurt us - just thought it would be useless...)

I completely agree that there is no good and added value with the stock id and measurements for Google but I felt like I had no choice.

I didn't want to start putting canonical between the pages because every other day an item is sold and then I would need to change the canonical to a similar existing item.

Are you saying that when a page makes a canonical to himself Google does not index it? Or treats it as a non original page (a copied page) even if I don't specify from where it is copied?
