Why does it show (in Moz) that we don't have any meta descriptions on our site when we do?
Interesting, Lesley - I hadn't made that connection - that Google may have different crawlers for rich snippets and 'normal' pages. Makes sense really, especially when you consider the data highlighter tool in WMT. Good point and I'm pleased I read this posting now!

Removing Dynamic "noindex" URL's from Index
Hooray! Usually, I just give my advice and then run away, so it's always nice to hear I was actually right about something Seriously, glad you got it sorted out.

Testing Your Homepage Title Tag
Hi Nathan, I generally A/B test every element I'm considering changing, but due to the nature of meta data this doesn't really work for title testing. I'm therefore pretty meticulous about research and strategy before I make any changes. I would say that the frequency really depends on your level of traffic. If you have 100,000 visitors a month, I would consider figures reliable and safe (from the point of view of not messing around TOO much) to change it every two months and monitor results. If your traffic is 1,000 visitors a month, you might have to leave the experiment running longer (perhaps 4 months) to get reliable statistics. Good luck!

What do you do with outdated news and articles?
If you have thousands of articles that are not pulling search traffic, dropping them from your site allows the PR that's trapped in those pages to flow into the rest of the site.

Sites Blocking Open Site Explorer? Penguin related.
Hello Nathan, It seems that www.decks.ca redirects to www.decks.ca/. The forward slash at the end of the address should be included in your OSE search. Please try that and confirm that it works for you. We apologize for the confusion on this one. I've confirmed the data displays properly here: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/anchors?site=www.decks.ca%2F Abe Schmidt SEOmoz Help Team

How to Link a Network of Sites w/o Penguin Penalties (header links)
If 50% of your links are [Exact] keywords, there is a good shot of the penguin. I would recommend going back and changing the links from the [Exact] terms to the brand name.

Partner Site Hit with Penguin - Links hurt me
If it's algorithmic then they just need to fix it fast, if it's manual... they still need to fix it fast and then do a reconsideration request. I would guess that as long as you don't have other bad signals it won't really affect your site, but maybe remove the links temporarily just to be on the safe side. SEL just did this, which may be of interest: http://searchengineland.com/google-talks-penguin-update-recover-negative-seo-120463 Note that part where it states "In particular, pointing bad links at a good site with many other good signals seems to be like trying to infect it with a disease that it has antibodies to. The good stuff outweighs the bad."

A tool for notifying when your site is down
Read a post by Will Critchlow which mentioned Server Density so I've been using them for a couple of months and must say I really like it! Response times are based on loading whole page not just header - as we know, an important element for SEO. Really great guys and the MD, David Mytton, has been really helpful. They have an iPhone App which is great for monitoring....or for just being a complete geek Also 7 day trial, so nothing to lose.

Negative Margins - Image Navigation
Well, if you don't want it to rank, I would at least follow accessiblilty best practices. And those would be: Make the images very clear to read Provide "Alt Attribute" text for each button that clearly says what each button is for Provide "Title" tags that identify the menu button (this is for screen readers that speak the content of a site to blind internet users). Make sure that you "map" the area of the button so that when a person hovers over the entire button, they get the little hand that indicates there is a link there. Having an image menu is definitely not my first choice. I'd really look at the possibility of using Google Fonts, and something like the CSS gradient generator to get dynamic fonts and gradients if that is what you are trying to do before using images. But, it's not the end of the world, I have done them in the past (years ago). You just want to make sure that it is very clear and readily readable for people that visit the site.
