Puzzling Rankings Drop
You're very transparent and I appreciate that, but I believe this takes a deeper analysis of the page. I seriously question what your Referral Traffic, Direct Navigation, and Search Traffic numbers looks like in detail - This may give us a better clue, as would a number of other deeper analytics as opposed to these surface numbers. If you would like to be a bit more candid about these numbers via message, I think I could help you uncover the issue. I look forward to hearing from you! @Neighborhood SEO

Should we handle this redirect differently?
Without seeing the actual 301s and tracing it all on the server, my guess is that that what might have happened during the 301 process is that all of the server rules in .htaccess is forcing a user to go through multiple "hops" before the redirect is complete. This is a simplified version, but what might be happening is something like this: /store/widget-group1/ --> /store/widget-group1/index.php --> /store/widget-group1/index.html --> /store/index.php?widget-group1 If this is the case, I'd try to create a 301 that reduces the number of hops. This page discusses how Matt Cutts of Google shoes that after a few 301 hops, Google may give up crawling: http://www.mktdojo.com/matt-cutts-discusses-301-redirect-limits/ Hope this helps...

Am I overlooking something basic?
I thought about the lag in updated info from Google, but that page (with the exact url) has been there for over 5 years. Also its not just the about page, it is literally every other page on their site except for their homepage is a void of reported pagerank. I guess I am going to chalk this one up to an error in Google's external PR reporting system. I have seen PR delays, but I have never seen Google report only the homepage (of a site this big) has any sort of PR.

Navigation for search
I would never recommend altering your site in any way specifically for a bot. Google has repeatedly stated that would be seen as cloaking and you definitely run the risk of a penalty. It can happen any time. Do you really want that cloud over your head? Even if Amazon is able to do it, you are not Amazon. Despite any statement to the contrary, a huge site like Amazon can do things that you or I may not be able to do. We can debate the fairness of it, but we are not on a level playing field with them. You seem to really want to do this, so feel free. But x months from now you will likely make a post "My rankings dropped and I can't figure out why", and then someone will notice the setting and that will be the answer.
