Hi David,

When using hreflang, you must always specify a language and a country.

In your example hreflang="en"  and hreflang="es" are not valid because they don't specify a country to go with the language.

If you are targeting the US for both languages, you would need to use hreflang="en-us" and hreflang="es-us".
