I'm not sure if you're already looking for information in a specific nice, but what you could do is extensive keyword research to also find long tail queries. If you then start checking the result pages for these long tail queries you should be able to find the ones that have not been written about yet and where you should be able to get a nice ranking for.

This is a broad question and I think its way too difficult to come up with such kind of topic as internet is updating every second with something new. There is no tool that can help you with that but here are some ideas you can use to create something that is original that is rarely discussed before (if not never).

          -          Read as much as possible so that you have a clear idea of what people are talking about and what think about the areas that are missing or things that not much people are talking about it and go from there accordingly.

          -          Scan forums and QnAs so that you know who is talking what and take the edge from there.

These are two ideas I use but you can always learn more when you started following this path.

          Hope this helps!

I think a good little memory hook here is hard answers make for easy links -

or, in more content marketing times - hard answers make for well ranking content.

            --

What I mean here is that if you look around, find a question that is being asked but there is no good or really, truly authoritative answer then you have a solid starting point.

This still requires you to do all the donkey work but that is the name of the game to some extent!

            Hope that helps!
            Marcus
