This is one of the common questions most bloggers have when thinking of new topic that not much people are talking about. As I am a blogger myself I take my inspirations from lots of different places. Here is what I do to keep my mind full of ideas and when pick my pen for writing I didn’t really have to think for a topic but I really have to choose which one I should go for.

        -          The King’s Suggestion

I am a big fan of Stephan King and one of his quotes is important to anyone who is in the writing industry.

“If you don't have time to read, you don't have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”

Take some time and read what is going on in the industry, what other people in the industry and talking about, what are the hot trends and more. Read and you will get more ideas to write.

        -          Trends Checking

Whenever I am free I usually go to Google trends and see what keywords are trending and what keywords are going down. This will give you an idea of what people want to see and what people are done with. Creating your content around that information will help you get loved by audience.

For trend checking you can use tools like Google Trends and Topsy.

        -          Twitter (or any other social network that works for you)

For a digital marketing industry, titter is the best place to communicate and get information of everything. All you need to do is to follow the right kind of people. When you do that you will have all the latest information, debates and ideas they share on their walls.

This is important for inspiration so that when you pick up the paper you will have ideas in your brain and all you need to work on is aligning them and figure out who to choose and what to save for the next topic.

        -          Forums where your audience is

For me, its Moz QnA and Quora. When I see people asking questions this give me a hint of what kind of real problem people are facing in their day to day life (practically). If you answer people’s query, they will love you!

Also search for QnA ebsites, competitor’s blog or do survey to see what people actually want to listen from you. Remember the ideas are uncountable what matters the most is quality content as without it its nothing but a piece of crap.

        Hope this helps!

          Aiden,

Here are a few more suggestions:

          • Go to Google news and do a search for your topic.  Then do searches for topics and people written about in the articles that show up in the results.
          • When you go to a trade show, ask vendors about the most important happening in their industry right now.
          • Review trade magazines and/or websites and see what topics their writing about.
          • Internally, ask management/employees about what they think makes a specific competitor so strong
          • Set up Google Alerts for industry keywords and review results on a daily/weekly basis.  Change keywords frequently.

Buzzsumo is another good source of trending information. It's a hubspot product that allows you to search for what's being shared (popular) by domain or key phrase. There are free and paid versions of the tool. The free one is probably good enough for your purposes.
