I agree completel with both Casey and Kevin. Go long tail. If you've done any PPC, mine through the keyword phrases that have triggered your ads. You'll find some long tail gems I'm sure. Also, Avinash Kaushik did a great post containing some custom reports for Google Analytics that allow you to see which long tail terms (based on number of words), and exactly what they are, that have produced any traffic and ROI. His post is here: http://www.kaushik.net/avinash/advanced-analytics-visitor-segments-engagement-social-media-search-long-tail/

Just go straight to the third part of the post to get the links to the long tail custom reports an how to use them. It's an awesome, awesome post.

      Hope that helps!

      Dana

Another useful tool is www.ubersuggest.org.  Type in "wall decals" and you'll get a massive list of what people are searching for.

          Hey Ali.

Hope everything is well and here is my take on Keyword Research and what to focus on.

First and foremost you must execute a really great keyword research for your site and i must get this out of the way before i talk about what keywords to rank for.

Some of things i have found helpful in getting keyword research done is,

          A. Competitors research. You can use your competitor sites and see what their page title tags are. Use open site explorer and look at anchor text. Just as well Semrush.com provides some really good insight on your competitors keyword research

          B.    your own Site search. If your store currently has a search function. Take a look at what keywords your OWN customers are using to look for products on your store. A great insight.

          C.   your own PPC campaign : If any, check out the existing or past PPC campaign and gage your anayltics

          D.  Adword Keyword Tools. : Very helpful tool and most of effective one for me.

After you compile the list, I highly urge you to go after the Long Tail Keywords 3 to 5 words long. There are your low hanging fruit. And speaking from a sales perspective, these are the words that tend to give you a higher conversion rate for sale.

Incorporate Mozscore with your keyword research . Depending on you business i usually look for Mozscore rank keywords that are between 30 to 60 and look at Global volume between ( 1500 and 50,000 ) searches per month.

Going after those two word or one word phrases that are highly competitive, does not make sense, because after all is said and done, YOU NEED SALES !

Make your keyword list and share it with us on here and i am sure we all will be more than happy to give you pointers on what keywords to go after. Remember Less competitive with good volume is the key.

Also a great way to find out the popularity of the term is also to look at the PPC price of that keyword in Google Adwords. That helps a lot as well. Sometimes those keywords that are 4 words long and have only 800 searches per month but their PPC price is like around $5.00 per click are the SWEET SPOT keywords. They convert well.

          Hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

          Hampig M.

            Hey Casey!

Thank you so much! We actually used Google Keyword Tools to find those long-tail and are pretty comfortable with that they are, and this is a great addition to that. So thanks so much! My main concern is whether or not we should be using these key words more often than wall decals. For example: If I am writing a guest post for a home decorating blog and I want to lightly talk about our product without too much keyword density, should I shoot for "wall decals" (the highest traffic grossing keyword) or "vinyl wall art" which we have a much greater chance of ranking for?

One thing to keep in mind is you have no idea what the majority of users intentions are while searching a more generic "wall decals"(ignore this comment if you have looked that far into your conversion funnel), are they just looking for ideas? brands? do they even know what they are looking for? or are they ready to purchase? I would immagine that someone searching for "wall decals for nursery" would have a higher purchase intent than just "wall decals".

First thing I would do is test with PPC and track your conversion rates for different terms. You may find out that you convert more for the long tail terms over the main terms - or vise versa. Then build my keyword strategy off of that.

Depending on your budget or resources that may not be an option. Personally I would rather be dominating 10 search results for lower traffic keywords that I know will convert than 1 higher traffic keyword that is hit or miss. But it's also always great to get both of those options of course 🙂 I would optimize your home page for "wall decals", and optimize any sub pages/landing pages/blog posts or any other controlled inbound sources for the long tail opportunities.

It sounds like medium-tail needs to be your focus right now. Getting to #1 for the main term is not feasible; getting to #1 for these other terms is possible.
