Should i change title tags?

I want to change all of the title tags on my website by adding a couple of more keywords (not keyword stuffing) but our previous media company chose words that were not aas relevant as ones I found.  However I was warned this is a bad idea, it will make traffic drop and if it works we will only see about 5% increase to pages.  Please advise.  Should I change them and hwo should I do it? One by one slowly while changing content to match or all at once?

Hi Christina,

There is no harm in changing title tags if the existing tags are not up to scratch. It will definitely not make traffic drop, unless you remove keywords for which the pages are currently ranking (and it doesn't sound like that is your intention). As long as the keywords are added in a way that makes sense and is not at all spammy, adding or changing a title tag is not harmful and is pretty common practice, even on some very large websites, on their primary pages.

In fact, if you look at some popular gambling websites, they often add current offers, bonuses, etc., into their existing title tags for short periods. As previously mentioned, as long as key parts of the tag aren't being removed, rankings won't be effected.

If some of the pages receive a decent amount of traffic (100+ visits per day), you could possibly change the title tags and place an annotation in Google Analytics.

Give it X weeks, and measure the increase in organic traffic to this page (or set of modified pages).

Quite tedious but somewhat measurable.
