  • Thank you for the inputs. I fully agree it depends on me and my products - this is why I am asking for ideas to find metrics rather than asking for numbers. Thanks!

  • There are not any easy fixes which can replace what a live person can do. Become an active participant in the wedding planning community, or hire an interested college student to do it for you. Every bridal forum, blog, magazine, etc. which accepts user generated content should be read. When appropriate leave comments. Do not try to offer a link to your content with every reply. You will be seen as a spammer and blocked. Be sincerely helpful, offer tips and occasionally link back to helpful articles on your site. This is a highly effective means of link building if you indeed have great content and industry knowledge. You will become known as an expert and a helpful person. You will also stay well-informed of the latest trends and ideas.

  • It's not worth spending money on anything that'll increase your toolbar PR unless you're planning on selling links, but I'm sure this is just semantics and you're meaning to help you rank Big 'paid' directories like YDIR, JoeAnt, BOTW can help a new site gain a little authority quickly, however if you're some weird niche and on a page far down them the link juice power of them isn't going to be particularly strong. Remember you're not actually paying to be in the directory for these sites but for somebody to review the site and see if it's worth including. Don't get links from directories who say they will sell you an entry! For the price I'd recommend sinking it into some sharable content (good infographics, a few videos to populate a youtube channel etc) and/or invest it in something else that will add value to your brand. The directories aren't bad as such, just maybe not the best way to spend the money.

  • Run it through HTTP Live Headers in Firefox (it's an addon). Just search for HTTP Live Headers. That will give you some insights as to how the browser is reading your page. It's very useful for when you need to diagnose issues like this.

  • Hi William, There are some really good ideas there- definitely worth looking into a competition of some sort to get links... Problem is most of our audience are currently our clients who already link to us, or use our IP (hence the fundemental C Block problem). We're looking in to the C-Block problem, as it seems the high performers on the SERP have an array of IPs for their clients sites, looking through their portfolios. Hopefully I can find something along the lines of Open Site Explorer which can also include server IP, so that I can get some good statistics on where we're at, but I'm thinking that's doubtful! Thanks so much for your help - this forum is an incredibly useful resource!

  • hi, thanks. I'll see what I can do with no-index and canonical links. It seems to me that the number of these pages should impede the indexing of the whole domain....

  • Not strictly no, we may have to compromise by losing a degree of control over the content. Thanks for the response Damien, very helpful. Jan

  • While I have read that the importance of a business name matching the domain name exactly could be deemed extremely beneficial, having the city name in with the appropriate keyword, and proper optimization should make for an extremely strong listing.

  • Nice video. Keep in mind rel=canonical is designed for pages which presently basically the same content. For example if you sell widgets then you might have a page sorted by price ascending, another by price descending, another by color, etc. All of these pages show the same content presented slightly differently. Often the links on each page will be identical.

  • For #1, your approach is solid. For #2, the waiting period length is dependent upon how quickly your entire site is updated in Google. This time period varies based on the size of your size, how deep some content is within your site, the popularity of your site's pages, and other factors. Post migration you want to confirm the 301 is working, ensure your pages are canonicalized correctly, then submit an updated sitemap to Google and Bing. Presently your Google SERP should show the links to your existing domain. After the migration, your most popular pages should show the links to the new domain within a day or so. It would not be unusual for it to take several weeks for all your pages to be updated. I would recommend waiting to make changes until after the majority of the site's pages had their URLs updated in SERP. That is the best measure that the migration has gone smoothly. Post migration, you can then make any desired changes to the site and track the results from those changes without wondering about worrying about the migration contaminating your results. For site-wide changes, you can start off with adjusting a few pages and see how your results are impacting before applying the change to your entire site. The campaign tool is wonderful. Look at the tutorial and learn everything you can about it. It can help you measure and track your site's SEO performance.
