Thanks for the responses guys. @oznappies: I'll have the canonical line at the top for best practices and so it's visible. @Ryan - My CMS has the option to noindex/nofollow too as there are some pages we don't want indexed. Thanks for the heads up about the WMT/Bing method though.

Consistent anchor text can help you resolve the issue. If you have several pages which cover very similar topics, that's great! You can rank for multiple pages in SERPs. You can even land several of your links at the top of the first page. "Los Angeles tour", "Los Angeles tours", "LA tour", "LA tours", etc. can all be used. If you have 4 strong pages that cover that topic, split up your keywords and if your pages are great quality you can dominate the SERPs. Do you have more the 4 pages for that topic? "Two day LA tours", "2 day LA tours", "LA tours 2 days", etc. You can expand or contract to meet your needs. The key is generated GREAT content, and consistently using proper anchor text throughout your site.

I don't have the exact figures, I know Facebook has more visitors per month than Google, 90% of people searching use google, If i remember Google's US count is lower than 50%. Some other quick stats: Facebook has 60 million status updates a day, If Facebook was a country it would be the 3rd largest in the world. Youtube has over 100 hours of video uploaded a minute, Wikipedia has 1781 articles a hour added.

Well it depends on your meaning of "necessary". It is never a requirement. If your site consistently uses folders and the proper meta tags then Google should get things right ever time. Specifying the tools in Google WMT is mainly helpful to assist Google in making a determination when there is any confusion. For example, if you have a page marked with the "EN" tag located in your /uk/ folder, then Google may not be sure whether the page should be considered for US or England. If you have your location properly specified in Google WMT, then that would be taken as a very strong indicator the web page should be associated with England. Short answer....just do it. It takes moments to take this action and helps ensures your pages are correctly associated with the right SERPs.

I would focus on the thin content that accounts for 50% of your traffic. From what I've seen Panda update may consider what visitors do when they get to your site, ie; high bounce rates, low page views, etc can negatively effect rankings. Focus on the pages that already get traffic and improve their experience and Google will reward you.

I think the ideal size is below 500k, yet I feel Google will crawl even larger sized pages if the content provides value for the users. Back in 2005 I remember Google had much tighter figures on these types of numbers yet in today's market it is a bit different, they seem to allow larger file sizes.

I would also include: "ping optimizer" (for SEO puprposes, prevent from pinging too often, eg. when correcting or updating a post) I almost always use "contact form 7" , a (multilingual) contact form
