I think you are misinformed. I also think you might be confusing broad and phrase match.  The broad match will display the keyword when any combination of those words is satisfied

      KW1 KW2 RandomWord1
      KW1 RandomWord1 KW2
      RandomWord1 KW1 RandomWord2 KW2 RandomWord3

With broad search - the ad will trigger when any of these searches are made as both kw1 and kw2 are present.

Hi - I'm actually talking about the broad match modifier which is a seperate type of match to both phrase and broad - here are some more details: http://www.calculatemarketing.com/blog/techniques/modified-broad-match-adwords-analysis/

broad modifier used before every word- ie  +kw1 +kw2 does the same thing as a phrase but allows mixing of order and words in the middle of the string of keywords

broad modifier before one keyword - ie kw1 +kw2 will allow google to treat the first keyword as broad and change it for like terms but second keyword always stays the same.

OK, thanks for clearing that up.

Now I am aware that if you have 2 Broad Match KW's it will trigger the ad even if one is not present

            Eg "KW1" will trigger Broad Match : KW1 KW2

So in your example above (KW1 +KW2)

Is this not going to create the same result as just having +KW2  ? IE KW1 can be present or not.

              in the example KW1 +KW2

kw1 in a search will not trigger the keyword KW1 +KW2

but kw2 kw1-ing will trigger the ad

and kw1 kw2-ing will not trigger the ad

Thanks David - thats clear - but in your examples above is this not just exactly the same as having +KW2 ? I believe that would be the case - if not please correct me. I am just struggling to see what the benifit / difference would be between the following:

                +KW2
                KW1 +KW2

no +kw2 would do the same as a phrase match

broad modifier only helps when you have more then one keyword

                  • best uses of the modifier are

                  • adding it to all keywords creating a enhanced phrase match

-adding to the keywords you want to remain constant ie +online schools

                  for school only online

Ok - thanks for clearing that up. Just one more small question :
                    suppose I have:

                    +KW1 +KW2

Is there any difference in having this than having:

                    +KW1 +KW2 KW3

IE in my understanding both would match exactly the same things?

                    Thanks

                              Yes,

                              +KW1 +KW2

will trigger the longer keyword match, but it may be beneficial to include the 3 word version if you're seeing a decent volume and getting lots of clicks. Likely the longer one will have an improved Quality Score and save you some $$
