Tiny Urls Passing on links
-
I setup a few tiny urls last week to test if the pass on any page authority. Is this something you have tried and tested ?
-
Yes, tiny urls such as bit.ly are basically 301 redirects. They pass most of the PR as would any other 301. This has been tested, confirmed and is otherwise thoroughly understood.
-
I've seen a test somewhere that shows Google can actually read through shortened urls.
-
Interesting I wonder if google benefits people that use their own shortening service ?
-
Not all URL shorteners use 301 redirects - some use 302's which won't pass any link juice - so be careful which service(s) you use (bit.ly is fine in this case ==> here's a larger list to peruse). You can also roll your own shortener that has some benefit re: keywords/relevance inurl as well as flexibility is choosing which type of redirect to use.
Hope this helps. Be well!

Very nice article from Danndy Sullivan you offered Anthony. Thumbs up for sharing it.

Heya, my pleasure... it's from 2009 but most all of the services listed are still relevant (surprisingly!)
