Hi Sara,
A URL is unlikely to ever bring down a penalty on its own - there would need to be a lot more at play before this happens.
Try not to get too hung up on which URL for SEO purposes, but do look at the one that is going to serve you best in the years to come. If the business is an app, then having app in there can help others understand what it is that you do.
Try to focus on the brand as well - if you market yourselves as mobilewebapp, then try and stick to something close that will again help with brand recognition.
You will be surprised just how much Google loves a brand, so choose wisely and market accordingly.

Thank you James for your answer.
The company I'll start to work for is a startup. They have won many startups competitions, so my guess is that somebody else bought the .com before they could. Moreover, they have the same name as an American company. They tried to buy it back, but the person asked for a huge amount of money.
The company exists since several years, and they always had a coherence between the URL, brand & company name. The 3 are the same. So I was just wondering what will happen if I change the URL.
Have a nice day,
Sara

Thank you Andy,
You gave me excellent suggestions.
Yes, I'll focus on a URL that helps people understand what the business does.
So you are suggesting that even if in the past they had a URL with the company name, it will not be a big deal to add a word to the company name, provided that it makes sense with what the business does. As a result, it's not necessary to change the content of the pages as the change is minimal.
Best regards,
Sara
