      Hi all,

Quick question.  I'm trying to update my sitemap via Google Search Console using a sitemap.xml file that I've created with ScreamingFrog.  However, when trying to submit it, it seems that Google only allows sitemaps that are located at a path within your domain (i.e. www.example.com/sitemap.xml) as opposed to being able to directly upload a sitemap.xml file.Is there any way that I can easily upload my sitemap.xml file?  Or is there any easy way that I can upload the file to a path on my domain so I can upload via the URL?Any insight would be much appreciated!Best,Sung

Yes you are correct, you need to provide the path to access your xml sitemap. Add your sitemap to the root directory of your domain via FTP then you should be all set. Try submitting again using the url

        Hope this helps!

The only way an XML sitemap can work is if it's on the web, Sung. And the best place for it is at the root of the website.

You can upload the file using an FTP program like Filezilla, or your hosting control panel like cPanel may well have a simple file manager that will allow you to upload the file.

The root of the website on most shared hosting is in the public_html folder. Once the file is uploaded there, the URL for the sitemap will be www.example.com/sitemap.xml and that's the URL you'll submit to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

          Make sense?

          Paul

            Thanks Bryan & Paul!

Both answers were very helpful and made sense.  Uploading via FTP sounds like the best way to get this done without much help from our dev team.

Did some further research on my end after your responses and I ran into this video here to help me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoFa6QDis40

            Thanks all!

If you are using filezilla that video should help you get everything sorted out. Best of luck!!

Related sitemap question--Is it a good idea to resubmit you sitemap every time you make a change to your website? Or if you now you got a juicy new backlink?

                  Hey DLG! Great question...

It won't hurt to resubmit but i guess it just depends on "how often" you make changes.

There was a thread on this about a year ago, take a look. Hope this helps! Cheers
