What will the SECOND link from a site do for me
-
Say I have an opportunity to get another link from a high authority site that has already linked an important article from me (a page I REALLY want to rank well). Now a month later, they are interviewing me and asking what I'd like to link. I have plenty of good content I can offer, but I really want that page they already linked to to climb a bit in the rankings.
So my question is, how is that second link best spent? Would linking to the same page give it a boost? Or does Google see it as "oh. Another link from the same domain. Yippee."
Would that link do more for a different page on my site at this point?

Multiple links from the same domain, whether to the same or different content, has diminishing returns from an SEO perspective. But if it's a link that people might actually click on because it's natural and relevant, then by all means get that link.

True. But that second link will still help boost your page ranking, especially if it's coming from a different page on the same site, a page with perhaps more authority and using link text that fits with the theme of your own content. If your content is going to be useful to the people that click on the link (as vcj appropriately points out), then it's worthwhile. Visitors might spend more time on the page as a result, visit other pages on your site, bookmark, link to it, or recommend it to others - all good signals to be sending to Google.

Absolutely agree!

I agree 100% with both Donna and vcj!
If you have the opportunity to get the backlink, I would take it. The more links you have to your site (from reputable sources) will demonstrate to Google that you have an influential/informative website. As long as the page that is linking to you is relevant, there is no harm from getting the link.
Keep up the great work getting those links!
