Tracking Back linking Initiatives

Can anyone give some feedback as to the best way to I should go  about recording and documenting my back linking initiatives? I was going to set up an excel sheet but I am not sure what information to include. Can any give me feedback as to the best way to go about doing this or are there any templates/online resources available?

I use Raven Tools for this.  It has a link manager build in that takes a lot of the legwork out of it.  You can also have google analytics automatically populate Raven with new referring links if you choose.

It is a commercial solution. However it's a pretty good value one too, especially considering the other tools that you get with an account .
