HTACESS Redirect Root Domain To Sub-Directory
-
Hi Guys,
I posted on another post here http://moz.com/community/q/site-migration-between-cms-s about an issue I am hleping out on with a client about migrating between Joomla and Wordpress. He wants to keep some of the old links live on the Joomla installation (I have advised that Google won't be able to crawl these) he wants the new wordpress installation to run on www.site.com/customise (a subdirectory) I have researched this and can't see any issues with indexing or page authority as it's just like having an index.php on the end of every URL.
So basically if you go to www.site.com it will be redirected to www.site.com/customise. Will there be any issues, will go frown upon this in anway?
Kind Regards
Neil

None that I'm aware of. I looked at this same issue about 4 years ago and didn't see anything that said otherwise.
Additionally, some Open Source software like Oscommerce will default to a directory unless you change it. www.example.com/catalog Other shopping carts I have seen do the same thing with /shop /store.
Think you're safe

Hi Neil,
As Don says there is nothing technically wrong with serving the site from a subdomain, google will simply see all the content as coming from the www domain, so no issues with indexing, getting page authority etc.
The issue is likely to be the 'keeping some of the old links live' - I cannot think of a way you are going to be able to do this unless you recreate the old joomla content on the new wordpress install and either make the wordpress install serve the same urls as joomla did or 301 redirect the old urls to the new ones. When you say that you have advised that google will not be able to crawl them this means also that users will not be able to see them, that YOU will not be able to see them. So - they are not really live in any real sense (unless I misunderstood something!).
