As someone that moderates a pretty big forum, I hate people that try things like this.

I have nothing against posting to forums as a strategy of generating traffic. Although from a search engine perspective I think the linking factor is low, but I get a few thousand hits from forum posts a month so I know not to place all of my eggs in the google basket. Forum posts can work for traffic, I recommend it to my clients actually. BUT I recommend them to post helpful topics or answers, not spam.  Look at the first two pins in this forum, http://www.prestashop.com/forums/forum/7-installing-prestashop/  They are helpful, they get a lot of views because they are and I get a bit of traffic from them because of that. From the first post I get about 1k traffic a month. Multiply that by how many forums I am active on, and how many links I have out there, it is an awesome strategy. But at the same time, I flag about 20 messages a day for being spam and the other mods which there around 75 of do the same.

The best advice I can say is give back and help people in forums and you will get traffic. Spam forums and you won't have an account on them any more.

I remember seeing one for the Matt Cutts videos a few months ago and im pretty sure he said its not a problem if its relevant and adds value to the site in question.

Yes, but he also said that people are not usually named "Buy cosmetic online". That's just plain spammy.
