We are planning on running several contests on our site, can anyone give some recommendations of sites where you promoted your own contests with good results?

Pinterest and Facebook have worked well for me. Anywhere your users are. Find a news outlet relevant to your niche and let them know. Similar to the way Marin software got their search geek contest on search engine journal.

You want to make sure your contest has a social layer to it and is creative and fun first then

1-You can find contest sites like directories to submit to. -just do a simple google search

2-Co brand the contest with a site that has following

3-Pay for social media promotions or sponsored posts about contest

4-Outreach to sites to let them know about your industry related contest

On top of social networking as Chris and David mentioned you can also use your content to reach your target market and earn back-links by getting the content promoted on contest websites specific to your location/industry and also approach community websites to promote it.
