Quickest way to remove content from Google index?
-
We had some content on our own website indexed by Google and the content was changed later. But that content is still showing up in Google results. Of course because it was indexed.
Its very important for us that content should not show up in Google. So how to remove that content quickly from Google Index?
I know normally when it crawl again it will show new content.
Google url removal tool or Google url fetch ? or anything else?

Hi Vikas,
Yes, you are on the right track. Don't use Fetch as Googlebot. Use "Remove URL" in Google Webmaster Tools. It's not instant, but does work fairly quickly. Hope that helps!

Okie but why not google fetch ? it helps to index content quickly isnt it ?
Also if you check url removal tool on webmaster
it says there are some requirements before you use the url removal tool !! Such as below -
To remove a page or image, you must do one of the following:
- Make sure the content is no longer live on the web. Requests for the page must return an HTTP 404 (not found) or 410 status code.
- Block the content using a robots.txt file.
- Block the content using a meta noindex tag.
I wonder why is that page has to return 404. My page still exist and it just has a new content. And I just dont want the old content to be removed from google index so it no longer appears in Google results.

Ahh, now I understand better what you are asking. So, you still want the same URL indexed, but you want Google to be reflecting the new content.
Yes, in this case, I would use Fetch as Googlebot.
I would also recommend resubmitting your sitemap. That will help too.
Thanks for the clarification! Hope that helps.
