• Citations. :    Check out Yext.com  or getlisted.org Make sure thats in order . Both awesome sites. ( Google not on the list , so you must do that separately )

• Address, phone number on Every page of your site :  Site wide footer.

• YELP is a must these days. A lot of traffic is directed through there. It also depends on your business, I mean what is the your local business about

• Geo Target keywords. : For example:  Car insurance :  try geo targeting your keyword list. :  los angeles car insurance or even deeper. Tarzana Car insurance. It all depends on your keyword research..

• DEF. Local Chamber or commerce. Good link value specially if they are popular, and look for Keyword centric guest posting. Forums Etc.  But also try to connect with other local business's.

Would you also put location into alt-tag? Like "dog pound los angeles"

What about putting a web page with a URL "dog-pound-los-angeles-ca"

or the extreme "dog-pound-LA-zipcode-address"

Has anyone done that and gotten back SERP improvement for local?
