Yes. If you help people with content, particularly if it's good quality linkbait/ viral content/ whatever you want to call it, then people should know where it came from. Links from high PR sites (which pass on link juice) can make a huge difference to your website.

You should always get links back to your website/ profile page where possible. In case you didn't know, links with nofollow are meant to not pass on "link jiuce". I personally have doubts that nofollow is applied by Google in every case, but that's yet to be confirmed.

What would you say in relation to a web developer.

Let's say I create websites for a living (which is one of my income sources). I usually include a link in the footer that links to my website creation page and also my personal profile.

          http://www.nicheoptimizer.com/website-creation/

          and

          http://www.nicheoptimizer.com/justin-lewis/

Anchor texts are usually switched around for the website creation page, and always "Justin Lewis" for my personal page.

Would you consider these earned links that won't hurt rankings?

Yep - I think it's good that you have links back to your website. They say aggressive exact match anchor text is not recommended but when I designed and developed, there was a limit to how many sites I put out, so I don't think that would have been going overboard.

From what I know, it sounds like an honest approach. Good luck 🙂

There's been a long debate about links in the footers of websites you create. My best suggestion here is - instead of a link on every page of the site, just put a link on the about page of the website indicating that you built the site. It's a more obvious link for human users, the about page is linked to by every other page on the site, and it's unlikely to get into any trouble with filters that Google might build around sitewide footer links (many of which are often manipulative).
