Why is SEOmoz a .org?
-
I have always wondered this and was curious if anyone had the answer. Most sites are.com and I assume that is most peoples go to when typing in a URL.
So why does SEOmoz use .org?
-
SEOmoz was created as (and remains to this day) a .org domain. The initial goal was to create a blog in which Rand could share with others what he learned about SEO - with no intention of monetizing it. Interestingly enough, this proved surprisingly successful. By focusing on providing a great deal of content and tools to our readers at no cost, we create brand-loyalty and awareness, and trust in our products. This, in turn, leads to profitability, as more and more readers, drawn in by what we offer for free, are compelled to sign up for premium membership.

Yeah, but why did Rand pick .org

(e.g. was his intention to create a non-profit organisation/blog or maybe he thought that .org would give him an advantage in SEO and trust)

In the past .org's had a sort of "non-proft" or "community" connotation to them. At one point it was suspected that Google valued .org's over .com's for this reason but that has since proven to be false. However a .org followed his original intent of creating a community which offered mutual knowledge and insight to each other, not one whose sole intent was profiting.
