  • It's a technique of guerilla and internet marketers. It's not a link to your website but rather just another way to rank in SERP's for a keyword. I've never heard of it being negative.

  • Point 1 - it takes some time before Google takes redirects into account - if you changed the structure recently, it can take several weeks before these duplicates are removed from Webmastertools. I assume you have already checked that these url's are indeed 301 redirected by testing them with web-sniffer.net and/or Fetch like Google. Point 2 - you can only remove content in the following cases (source: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1663419?rd=1 content is removed and generates a 404  - as you redirect the old style url to the new one it's generating a 301 & not 404 so removal is not possible this way the content that needs to be removed is blocked in the robots.txt - which I guess is not the case for you rgds, Dirk

  • Moz is only one set of data and it is limited. There are a lot of other factors that come into play. Their anchor text could be richer, I see more followed domains for them in Ahrefs, they may have more NAP listings or branded mentions than you, they may be better optimized on site. It's hard to get an accurate picture of the landscape, but you just need to remember that all these tools provide insight and some data, but they're not working with a complete data set.

  • Sure. Feel free to disavow and block that one. There was a recent well done blog post here on malware / spam referrer sites that could further help you: http://moz.com/ugc/how-to-stop-spam-bots-from-ruining-your-analytics-referral-data. Cheers!

  • Hi there, thanks for your question! Speaking of questions, I have one of my own. What do you mean by "lower pages" when you ask "What is the best method to getting the lower pages indexed?" I am asking for clarification as you have a one-page site, which shouldn't have lower pages. Christy

  • I'm working on a site that had a very poor disavow file in place from a previous agency.  I went through the link profile with a fine tooth comb and added a bunch more domains to the file.  Organic traffic has gone up over 80%. That is not our only problem and there are other factors to work on but the cleansing is reassuring even though we know the profile is pretty thin.  But again that just goes to show quality always wins over quantity. I would say there may be a whole host of issues hampering ranking but a dirty profile is a must fix, no matter the immediate outcome.  I explain to clients that I anticipate a short term fall and why to set their expectations, then anything positive is a great bonus.

  • Google has stated they are better now at relating subdomain content to the TLD domain, but you're probably still better off using a subfolder. If you do go with a subdomain, make sure to link them in your GA code for better reporting. There are so many languages spoken in Malaysia that this domain issue is really not going to help visitors on your site. If you're going for consistency, you'd need subfolders or subdomains for all supported languages. If you're only using English, then I wouldn't even consider this change. Simply use www.domainname.com.au/malaysia/ to host content relevant to this market until you can get your TLD. This would send the strongest signal to both search engines and site visitors that your content is targeted for Malaysia.

  • What do I tell her to alleviate her fear that she's not ranking for a ton of keywords and that this other guy is creating crap content? Keep these in mind.... **1) It is important to stay focused.   ** If client hired you to focus on valuable keywords such as (A) and (B) then they call you because they are not ranking for (F) and (G), which are not valuable keywords, then you need to revisit the original plan withe client (chase valuable keywords).   They need to know that putting work into (F) and (G) are less likely to move their income needed and going after them in addition would not be as valuable as putting MORE work into (A) and (B). 2) Promising rankings vs Promising a work agenda Clients need to know that when you quote them a price that you will do specific work for them.  The results of that work might produce certain rankings, however, you have no control over what work competitors are putting in or will start putting in after they realize that you are on the attack  --  then the work that you "thought" would produce certain results will not achieve them because competitors have raised the bar.  Every time you raise your clients income or rankings that was done at the expense of a competitor and some of them will respond vigorously. So I would always go into any project with educating the client that the work you do might be offset or more than offset by work done by the competition.   The client is paying you to compete, the client is not paying you to assume all competitive risks that are in their industry.   That should fall fully on them - not on you. If a webmaster in my niche decides he wants to overtake me and hires an SEO to add more fuel to his fire the result might be a decrease in rankings for HIM.  Why?  He needs to be adding fuel at the same rate as me just to keep up and faster than me if he expects to get ahead. 3) Chase rankings or chase keyword reach? At my office two people work all day, every day, trying to increase the keyword reach of the website.  (KW reach = getting great content, best-on-the-web or close to it, out there for more and more keywords)   We might "watch" rankings, but we don't "work on rankings".   Working on keyword reach is a guaranteed success almost every time because you pickup new traffic for new keywords.  And as you get more and more great, best-on-the-web, content out there your site starts earning a bigger and bigger fan base and more and more sharing.  The result of that generally, over time, results in an increase in rankings. So, we are running a factory for quality content.  Instead of working on rankings we are putting everything into "reach".  And that is where I am betting all of my money. (This will work for you if you are working in a niche with great keyword breadth... but if you are working where keyword breadth is really narrow you can run through the reach in a couple of years.  But some industries can keep two people busy for decades.)

  • Hello, I understood what google wants, I'm working with partnership that will have unique videos. But how do I solve? Embed the videos? Will have to be removed? Ie erase everything? Or is that if I start now with unique videos is enough? In fact, in Brazil, 99% of the videos work well. Remove all, would be to start from scratch, wanted to see a way that does not happen. How do I solve? What should I do with the old? Thanks for your answers and help.

  • Hi Richard, Thanks for the advice. Yes I just got the hand of using OSE   I just didn't understand if this is something I need to watch.  I have just launched our new platform and basically I have an SEO company on board but don't seem to be producing the goods, I find I get alot more from Moz. I haven't been hit with a penalty, but I know our competitor of ours has, and it seems to be from spammy backlinks as noted by someone at moz.  I'm just curious to know if this should happen to me, I would rather try to avoid the same situation from happening to us.  Any advice around how to go about avoiding this, or how we can eliminate the potential would be much appreciated. Cheers

  • You'd want to get the redirect to go to the most applicable place as possible so if it's OLDSITE.com/apple it'd be best to send it to NEWSITE.com/category/apple if you have that level of information from old to new.  Otherwise, domain to category would be second best. Third, domain to domain.

  • I would add to Rob's suggestions that you need to make sure you have user generated content on these pages. If you do not add reviews to your pages you will have a very difficult time ranking. You will have to make sure that you have something uniquely valuable to offer your customers, something they can't find on any other site, and that is why user generated content is so important on product pages. You can only rewrite a product description so many ways. Chances are, your static content will not provide anything to a customer they can't find elsewhere. With a low DA in a competitive market, UGC is your best friend. I would also add that it helps to have a video or two on your product pages. Add a video on how the product works or record an in house review of the product. It will really help your rankings and user experience.

  • _For each subdomain (es.example.com/blah-blah for this example), I need to place the hreflang tag pointing to the page the subdomain is on (es.example.com/blah-blah), in addition to every other 28 subdomains that have that page (it.example.com/blah-blah, etc). In addition, I need to place a canonical tag pointing to the main www. version of the website. So I would have 29 hreflang tags, plus a canonical tag. _ Everything correct but the canonical part (but maybe I misunderstood what you wrote). If the different country targeting pages are in different languages, then you don't have to point the rel="canonical" to the main www. version. NOT AT ALL, because they are not identical. You will start seeing the search snippets of the URLs of those geo-targeted versions (shown because of the hreflang) using the title tag and meta description of the www. version page. So, for instance, the search snippet of the Italian version having the Italian URL but everything else in English. If you need to use the rel="canonical" it should be self-referential (if not another in same cases, but of the same subdomain)

  • Hi I don't really think that you will have hard time ranking up in google for adult toys store. My friend ranked #1 successfully for multiple keywords related to adult toys store. His target was local and his google page was ranking number 1 for certain terms. Also what i think is you don't really have to build backlinks from porn websites. You can create quality contents regarding your brand and then get quality backlinks to the store you are trying to rank. So what i think is you really don't have to worry.

  • Hi Jason, You can request the hosting company you're using block the hostnames below. You can also look for their IP addresses however note this is probably a waste of time because they are so easily changed. This is a tool that you can use if you do want to block by IP http://www.whatsmyip.org/whois-dns-lookup/ In many cases it shows me the hostname has more than one IP address. Better to block the host name itself then to deal with the IP's. Adding a web application firewalls that give you control will make a world of difference to your clients and yourself. Remember you can check if your site is infected for free by using the tools below. • Videos from Youtube are great. Make sure you embed them with an http and not the standard http. Pinterest is a great link source, BBB if you have access to that.
