  • Hi Todd, I would not be concerned about Google's OCR regarding images in your header. That is not my understanding of the purpose of OCR. But, I would definitely search the Internet for that call tracking number. Because you had it published in real text on the site, it may exist elsewhere on the web. You need to find all instances of it (if any) and edit them to reflect your authoritative local business number. Good luck!

  • Hey Stephane, We were just engaged in a similar quandary yesterday, but a little different circumstance based on whether to use sub-domains or sub-folder and the effects that may occur to our ranks in Google.  We came across the follow two articles which may shed light on your current questions. Older article, but still valid: http://moz.com/blog/understanding-root-domains-subdomains-vs-subfolders-microsites http://www.whitefireseo.com/site-architecture/subdomain-or-subfolder-post-panda/360/ Shouldn't really cause a problem, but your sub-domain may not benefit in ranks from the strength of your root domain. Hope this helps, and best of luck.

  • Hi Tran I can't see this being a problem at all.  The content will likely be too small to be seen as duplicate across all of the pages, plus it will be constantly refreshing, so the content will remain relatively new. Furthermore, because the blog posts are hosted on the same root domain, it shouldn't be seen as spammy.  If you were linking to 5 external sites over and over it could look a bit suspicious, but as its your own website it's no different from have a site navigation menu on the top or the side of your website. In other words, I think this will be absolutely fine and would even be a good user experience, so go for it!

  • I agree with Moosa that it's likely not a problem. That said, I think it can be a problem when the "chrome" of closely related sites start linking together aggressively. One tactics spammers use in link networks is using the same content templates again and again, and I wouldn't be surprised if Google used this in their detection algorithms. On the other hand, Google has also said they look at site structure and design elements when determining if sites on separate subdomains (but the same root domain) should be considered part of the same site for ranking/link purposes. Regardless, in your case I think you should have little to worry about.

  • Thanks Mike! In your opinion, big 301 redirects would be totally better ?

  • Hi Markas, Unfortunately, we've now moved into an area that is not within my area of expertise. It would be best if you would start a new thread with this new, separate question so that you can title it something that will earn attention from our members and associates with knowledge about domain extensions. It's almost always better to start a new thread if a new question comes up that is not related to your original question. Hope this tip helps!

  • Hi Jason, I have a site in GWT where it was wrongly setup minus the www and it was showing no links, adding the www version solved the problem. So in that regard it is possible, although it is very odd that it would change from one day to the next. By all means add the non www domain to GWT to see what data you get, but the switch from yesterday and the loss of rankings is worrying and you should definitely dig deeper... any chance there was a server setup change recently that might have thrown a spanner in the works?

  • Our rankings on the two main keywords have recovered slightly.  We've gone from page 5 to page 3 on 'nuts and bolts', and are page 2 on 'bolts and nuts'. I think what's happened is that, rather than us being penalised directly, sites that link to us have been penalised, resulting in a knock on effect.  Does this sound reasonable?  I don't think we'd be page 2 on such a competitive term if we had been penalised. I've been slowly building relevant links with prospective customers (ie a few classic car sites have linked to us, our old imperial bolts are very useful for them) and kept up a very basic social media profile - just the odd blog post and sharing on Facebook and Twitter. Regarding links, looking through my link profile <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.thomassmithfasteners.com</a> we do have links from directories that don't look fantastic, more are shown in Webmaster Tools than are listed here.  Some of the directories no longer seem to exist, I take it I don't need to do anything and Google will catch up in those cases.  For the others, should I attempt to remove (or disavow) all links with names like best-directory etc? Are most directories bad these days?  Or should I just concentrate on building better links? Again, any advice is greatly appreciated. Best Regards, Stephen

  • Are you sure that they are ranking well because of these pr sites or another cause? My gut is telling me it's because of other factor(s). However, the scenario David presented is indeed possible.

  • It's the wordtracker chrome add-on called scout. I was using it to find high performing keywords and decided to run it on my own site. That's when I noticed no meta description being highlighted. There are no settings in the add-on though I did some more reading and w3.org states it is good practise to use lower case for all HTML elements and attribute names, so I'm going to change it. http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/#h-4.2 Better to follow good practice than bad.
