  • You should definitely remove those keywords, the change could make you lose trafic  but a penalty will get you into more serious problems. In my opinion, Yes works first to optimize your website and then continues with the linkbuilding Earning http://www.seomoz.org/blog/the-death-of-link-building-and-the-rebirth-of-link-earning-whiteboard-friday

  • The only action I can think of is sending a letter to the po box. If the domain owner has an email address, they are not required to respond.

  • I repeated this elsewhere, but I think canonical on 404 page does make sense, especially if you consider the following two statements true: There is a reason for 404s, don't 301 everything There is no reason to lose the value of someone linking to your page. If those 2 statements are true then you should create an individual error page, and then everytime you serve a 404 you should include canonical to that error page. That page should have useful content (explanation of page missing and where you could go), probably a search box, and links to the most valuable content on your site. This satisfies both points.

  • A pleasure! In answer to your questions: there is a slight risk of a temporary blip, but assuming you do everything correctly at the same time, the transfer should be seamless and any ranking changes minimal and very temporary. Not as far as I know. Changing the permalink structure doesn't cause 301-redirects to be put in place so you will need to do that separately. You could do that in the htaccess file or you could use a plug-in. We like to use John Godley's Redirection Plug-In or there is another here. Best of luck.

  • And another question. If i have a file named filename.php I can not make and use a css file named filename.css. The names clash in some way.

  • _If the keyword you are searching is a brand and no other companies are targeting that keyword [this is my assumption here], you will get an extended sitelinks. But when the keyword is too generic [as is the case with you], you might have to settled with text only site links. _

  • _Ok the thing is – you cannot decide between a keyword rich domain and a general company name. After the EDM update, I think you should not be going for keywords rich domain. Moreover, you find it really tough to make your brand presence stand out. For say, if you have a domain like this – seo-company-UK.com, how on earth you are going to boost its brand image. If this is not enough, you will struggle while building brand based links for the website. Hop you understand. _

  • Kyle, a 404 page pops up if a visitors tries to access a URL on your site , however the server is unable to find that page on your site. A 301 redirect on the other hand is a technique to forward a particular URL  permanently to another page. Based on what i read in your question, you should have the 301 redirects set to your home page and not the 404 page. If you set them to a 404 page with your home page link on it then the visitor has to take an extra step to reach your home page and try to find the info they are looking for.

  • Normally if two pages have similar content, you can use canonical tag to tell Google about your preferred page. But if you want to keep them both without using canonical then Google will randomly decide on of the 2 similar page. Similar content is an issue for sure. though recently Google's algo has become complex and it can recognize type of the site like it seems to be OK for many eCommerce sites to have similar content. But if you can reduce the percentage from 50 % to bit lower, it will be better I guess.

  • I would also base it on the site content. Does the site content (product listing) warrant an extra sub directory to be created. For example if you are selling cars, then you can have a directory for Honda and then another subdirectory for the specific make with the keyword Honda in it. In your case since the site only has 6 pages, it would not make sense to create the subdirectories.

  • I would suggest you to change: content='Book your hotel in Malta with Malta hotels online - Competitive prices for hotels in Malta, budget hotels, Malta excursions, transfers and more.' name='description' /> To: Cuz this is the first time that I see an content to be declared before name. I dont say that this would help something in your rankings, but better fix it.

  • From Whiteboard Friday - The Biggest SEO Mistakes SEOmoz Has Ever Made http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-biggest-seo-mistakes-seomoz-has-ever-made "3. Recommending People Use H1 Tags with Keywords This mistake is a little bit more subtle. For years, SEOmoz recommended including keywords in the H1 of pages. After we started doing formal machine learning correlation tests we found out that this tactic didn't actually help very much at all (including the keywords in normal text in bigger fonts worked essentially the same). This was a shame because it meant we wasted time and energy convincing our clients to update their H1s."

  • if you wouldn't like to use subdomains, I would go for non-www.

  • Personally I would try to use all the old content & try to keep the urls (if not duplicate)  and put a 301 redirect on the old website, hopefully will be indexed well and not lose that traffic.
