  • Sure thing Jeff. They can help in a few ways: 1. They add content to your pages (without you having to pay anything) 2. As you suggested, they can also send you some long tail traffic 3.Google can display the star rating of whatever it is you're reviewing via rich snippets: http://www.dannyvince.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/engraved-gift-ideas-rich-snippets.jpg However, they're a double-edged sword. If you're careful about keyword density and other on-page metrics (like I am), letting a bunch of people write the content of your site isn't the best idea. I'm actually KILLING a competitor's site right now in the SERPs who have mostly UGC/reviews. A lot of this is because my on-page is leagues and bounds above theirs.

  • I would either nofollow or just have it on one page.

  • As you probably know, the shared sites are set up as sub folders within the main site.  You need to make sure that Google sees these sub folders only through their respective domain names, and does not see them as sub folders within the main domain.  Otherwise, Google will think the pages are duplicates.  You can control this in your robots.txt file of the main domain (i.e. instruct Google not to look at those sub folders when crawling the main site). Best, Christopher

  • Thanks, Tommy. That confirms what I thought. I wouldn't mind so much if the bigger site didn't nofollow my author tag but since they do then I'm getting little benefit from them other than exposure to their audience. And that is worth something, to be sure. Maybe I'll post on their site for a day or two and then delete the post on their site (I have that ability) so that I get some exposure there but then the only copy of the article will be on my site after a couple of days.

  • Is it on its own domain or subdomain? You can exclude the entire thing in robots.txt, then verify the site in GWT and request exclusion of the entire dev site.

  • For those wondering, Matt Cutts answers the question in this video; It basically means that your site is is a grey zone. Not completely clean nor completely useless. Unfortunately for http://macpokeronline.com, it seems that the issues are not that easy to resolve.http://suite.searchmetrics.com/en/research/domains/organic?url=MacPokerOnline.com&cc=US

  • It sounds like you got a hold of the problem. Verify the subdomains in WMT Block the CDN subdomains with robots.txt Request site removal in WMT for the subdomains make the canonicals absolute Keep the blocked subdomains in WMT, when you log in you will see a message by the subdomains saying "Critical issue with your site" which is just telling you that the site is blocked.. I like to keep it in there so I can see it's still blocked.

  • I haven't tried this method out, but it might be what you're looking for http://www.businesshut.com/spam/google-analytics-referrer-spam/ If not there, check out http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/analytics - There might be an easier solution there. Good luck!

  • They are looked at as spaces just like hyphens. As far as I remember, Matt Cutts says the only symbols that count as a character are underscores. Everything else is a space.

  • A very strong home page will help out wack landing pages. If you have the time to breeze through chapter 7, it may help to grow the popularity: http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo. There are way too many factors in trying to find out why one page ranks over another. And let me tell you one thing.... always remember this.... OSE is not that accurate, but it's the next best thing to have since you can't get your competitors username/pass to GWT. Compare your GWT inbound links to OSE's inbound links to see if there is a difference. My recommendation is work on your pages. Jesus Christ! If you were Google, would you rank a page with only 3 sentences? http://www.rainchainsdirect.com/collections/todays-deals/products/contempo-chain  Those pages are probably bringing down the rest of your site. Sorry to sound so blunt, but that's my answer.

  • No, the meta description tag has no effect on rankings. It could affect CTR if someone things it's an outdated article if the date displayed is old.

  • Well Google prefers relevant page-by-page level redirects....  Do what Google wants and you will be rewarded. Your client is investing in SEO so he/she should understand that the work you're doing, no matter how costly, is an investment in his or her business. Sometimes the 'right' decision isn't always the most cost-effective, but it's still the right thing to do.
