  • We have had two massive clients (one well-known real estate company, one international brand) both manually penalised for these type of links so I would say you should probably start working them out of existence before you get penalised as well. (If I had been a Google reviewer instead of an SEO guy helping me out, you'd have a penalty. All it takes is the wrong set of eyes on the site.) As far as your below question re: historic link profile, it's hard to say. You never know what Google sees, when they first saw it and how much they value it. I believe links get less valuable over time so to some extent it's not the be-all, end-all but if those links have been only just crawled in the last few months even if they were created 10 years ago, they may be just as valuable as one created today.

  • Hi Roderick. Yes, links from anywhere in the world have value too them based on that domain's authority and trust. In fact, if all other things were equal (super rare hypothetical) but one site had a greater diversity of linking domains (.co.uk, .de, fr, etc.) that site would likely rank higher.  See: http://moz.com/search-ranking-factors, and, "As in 2011, metrics that capture a diversity of link sources (C-blocks, IPs, domains) have high correlations. At the domain/subdomain level, subdomain correlations are larger than domain correlations." Cheers!

  • Very good point. I usually don't post external links TO my site on G+ so I didn't think of this. I do this for discovery of my own pages but not the other way around.  Good tip!

  • Personally, I wouldn't use it. In my opinion it looks incredibly spammy, unless it's a blog post referring to another post or page on the website.

  • this is the way I understood it - if you can add the canonical url to each page it is ok. If you can't add the canonical you shouldn't mask the url as you will be creating duplicate content as each page is accessible on 2 urls, the subdomain and your personal domain

  • A natural backlink profile has diversity - get ready for it - naturally. While in a perfect world, you want a strong variation in the number of domains linking to your pages, however if the same site chooses to link to your page(s) on their own, without your or any other outside influence, I don't see an issue with this.

  • If the entire page where you're writing is about content marketing, on a site that is related to content marketing, chances are the link would line up fine.

  • As a rule of thumb - if the links add value for the visitor of your site, make it a "Follow" link. If it is a commercial link, or a link to a site with low quality, it needs to be nofollow. Check also https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/96569?hl=en rgds, Dirk

  • I would agree with Ryan, just use the company name, looks better and works better.

  • Hi Ben, Sponsoring events is a great link building tactic. As the link will come as a side-effect of the sponsorship rather than from direct payment, Google will not penalise you for this. Imagine the reverse - companies would be far less likely to sponsor events, support charities etc if Google were to start penalising them. • Being a company, we'd suggest you to choose a agency that is in your budget but on the other end provides quality work. It's bit difficult to find the agencies that offers quality work in affordable pricing but as per our experience, the company called, Link Core Media is someone that you can rely completely. They have a good and qualified team that knows how to build quality links for your brand. Good luck!

  • A: Links from banner vs Content ? Content, always from the content, google like contextual links B: Backlinks from India SEO company do they hurt our link profile? If you think this backlink could not be good for your domain authority, use Disavow and sleep better, but I would not worry so much as soon as there are just couple of links, variety is also important. Should I ping my links using tools or have my friends click on them ? Nah, let them index alone. Patience is very important for SEO How many links should I try to build a week ? Depends on your niche and competitors, im working in a niche with low-medium competence and im creating 10 links / month, im ranking extrem well. E: Does the position of a backlink matter (in case your able to select position) I also like to write the backlink in the first paragraph so that google robot follow it as soon as possible, but i´m not really sure if this is a factor xD F) Link profile I would not use links on sidebars/footers for a link building factor, but for getting referred traffic interested on your niche. Always nofollow.

  • The main menu structure is where it would be important. Does your layout now have a menu with 100 links? If your hundred categories can be sorted into five or ten more general categories with other categories under those, it would make navigation easier. You can still keep all of your categories as first level under the domain in the URL, even if they are drop-downs (or however you want to do it) under an over-category. If the point is to get away from so many links in the header, even if they are not immediately visible, then the question is how important are all the categories. Can some be consolidated?
