How do you optimize your site for surrounding areas?
Hi Richard, Darin and Thomas are offering good advice for the basics of neighboring town optimization, but I feel more needs to be said, given the nature of your sample client's business model. First, let's touch bases about keeping your priorities straight, like this: You main goal is to optimize and rank well in the blended/local results for West Palm Beach. Your secondary goal is to go after organic rankings for other nearby towns (not local rankings, as your client is not physically located there) Now, here is where I differ slightly from the good advice that's being given by our members: Creating city landing pages is the most common practice for achieving these secondary organic rankings. However, you need to have something real to write about to justify the creation of said pages. For a dentist, this may be a little more difficult, as his business model is by nature stationary. By contrast, a carpet cleaner has an easy road ahead in creating city landing pages because he actually travels to those cities. What you need to ask yourself (and your client) is what the dentist does that can justify him creating content about those neighboring cities. For example, does he give or attend dental seminars in any of the neighboring towns? That would be a good reason to write a page optimized for the other city terms. Or, perhaps he sponsors a little league team in one of the neighboring cities, or visits elementary schools there? Try to find something to write about that genuinely reflects his presence in a neighboring town and your content will have a point beyond a grab for organic rankings. But always bear in mind, for a stationary business like a dental office, the bulk of your focus must always be placed on building up his authority in his city of location. I do not recommend creating a separate set of service pages for each city (botox jupiter, botox royal palm beach, botox wellington, dental implants jupiter, dental implants royal palm beach, etc.). This is awkward and not really useful to anyone, given that your dental client is in a single location offering the same services to all comers. So whereas go-to-client business models (plumbers, chimney sweeps, landscapers) are a natural fit for city landing page development because of their actual work in a variety of cities, stationary business models (restaurants, retail shops, dental offices) must be more creative to have a legitimate reason for creating this type of content. Definitely don't just throw up a bunch of thin or duplicate pages, swapping out city names in the title tags...but do try to discover if there is a true connection between your dentist and the neighboring towns and then use that as your reason for writing.

Does the root domain hold more power then an inner page?
yes, this is what I choose to believe because as you know in the dynamic world of SEO, there is no such thing as ultimate answer.

Selfgrowth.com - guest post opportunity or useless article site
It's certainly a safe site. As with all article sites, its value has been diminished significantly. As far as article sites go, SelfGrowth is probably one of the better ones out there. I know when I've had a surplus of content on a previous site a few months back we used it. Rankings did increase, but it's not like we used SelfGrowth exclusively, so impossible to say there's correlation. A link from there wouldn't likely hurt and might pass on a bit of 'link-juice', for lack of a better term. However, I'd only ever use it if you're overflowing with time-sensitive content that you don't have anywhere else to put. Other than that circumstance, I'd nearly always recommend doing some targeted outreach and getting your article onto a related blog in your niche.

How long for backlinks to kick in?
I'd certainly have a look into it, if I were you. Have a look at the websites around you and see what sort of links they're getting. Others on here might be able to give you a more definitive answer with regards to links being indexed/serp movement

My competitors all seem to use "junk" pages to rank / backlink, how to compete and not cheat
What did you pay in legal fees to set this up? That's something that needs to be considered as well, to make sure this is viewed by the government as a legitimate scholarship and not a contest.

Please help me with duplicate page title | duplicate page content issue
Also research the rel="canonical" tag. That may help, too.

New world order
I completely agree with EGOL on this one. I always let my clients deliver me the content for the website. I use the following argument for this: My expertise is SEO, yours is X. If you would have to write about SEO you would also not know where to start, I do. If I have to write about X i would have to do lots of research on the topic and still would not always be correct. You know a lot more about X. So if you can deliver me the content I can do what you hired me to do. My experience is that this works really well. Let them know that everything about their product of service that they feel is logical is not necessarily logical to others. So you could write content for them, but it will be low quality that no one will link to or share on Social Media so their is no point of creating low quality content. my 2 cents Regards Jarno

How long does it take for spam link building to take effect?
_Valid question as it seems. But there is no straight forward answer. If you ask any Google representative about this, he/she would suggest you flag the website. However, I have personally tried this but what it appeared to me that it never worked. It is a vicious circle. Google releases algo change > sites get panelized > webmasters find loophole > spam sites start gaining on ranking. _

Does anybody do directory submissions anymore?
To me, asking if you should submit to directories is like asking if you should post on forums or comment on blogs. Not all directories are the same. There are some well maintained directories, and many times over the years the submissions to these directories help rankings. Interesting that the Link Acquisition Tool in labs here on Seomoz points a user of that tool to lots of directories. One person that has maintained a wonderful directory list for almost 10 years now is Dan over at info.vilesilencer.com and great place to start if you want to include some smaller but well maintained directories in your SEO (and lists the larger ones too).

Internal linking question
linking in content with hyperlinks gets clicked more than images or buttons, and if it is relevant it will help get users to convert or go to the pages you want them to visit, while also helping your SEO by creating better anchor texts than you can achieve by simply breadcrumbs. With breadcrumbs you will be creating tons of links with the same anchor text on every page and it's not in content. so if "whole life insurance" is your main keyword for instance the breadcrumbs will only target that. But in your content you have the ability (and this is very important to do now to avoid over optimization penalties) to mix up your anchor text with variations such as "whole life insurance quotes" "whole life insurance policies" "what is whole life insurance" etc.

How long after disavow do you submit reconsideration?
Ok great and we are also getting that together for you on our end through majestic SEO. We can analyze the lost links and have included that in our submission. We are also editing your disavow link list to add the # at the top with a comment. Google asks that we do that. Have a nice day. MB

Is there a ranking delay for highly competive Keywords?
I think that what most people view as a "ranking delay" is actually the "barrier to entry" of a competitive niche. For some people the ranking delay is forever because they don't have the resources needed to compete. Entry into a highly competitive niche requires some type of resource.
