Chat through link building best practices and outreach techniques.

  • Having keywords in a page's URL improves its relevance for that specific topic, and getting links from topically related pages is ideal. However, in order to be a really good link the content on the page itself and the rest of the site must also be related to the topic as well. Then there are factors such as page authority, domain authority, and anchor text. So the URL of the page that the link is on is not itself a powerful ranking factor.

  • Hi Labici, I don't really know your niche and industry so I simply went to Google's Keywords Tool and entered Screenshot and got a few keyword ideas that got pretty high search volume but low competition (long tail keywords). Website Screenshot screen shot software screenshot program Those 3 above are only examples.  You can try it out yourself to find a some low competition but high search volume keyword ideas. Furthermore, if you are a SEOmoz PRO member, you can use their keyword research tool to find keyword alternative or ideas as well.

  • All these link reporting tools rely on crawlers unfortunately, none of which will perform the same as each other. Alan. You might want to use a couple of tools and work with the summary of their data. Also remember that the crawl freshness & accuracy will be different between different tools. It could be that the links existed and have since been deleted in their own site revamp. Especially run the same report through Bing's Webmaster Tools for a "second opinion". And btw, Google has been clear it looks down on sites that are charging to remove links. I seem to remember Google saying you could even report such sites. I'll see if I can find the confirmation of that. • If the link isn't hurting you then why would you want to hurt yourself by telling Google to disavow it? As Irving mentioned, the Disavow Links tool is a last measure not a go-to tool for every occasion. If bad links are really hurting your site then start reaching out to those other webmasters to remove the bad links (or at least nofollow them). If you've been algorithmically penalized due to bad links then you'll also need to start working on building a better, more robust link profile through outreach and try to grab some really good ones to help counteract the bad. If all works out well then offending sites will remove the bad links (hopefully without needing to pay), those links from good sites will show that you're working towards improvement and then after a refresh you'll hopefully see rankings start to bounce back. If people won't remove your links, are asking for exorbitant amounts of cash, or are flat out ignoring you... then you can consider the Disavow Links Tool.

  • Hi googilvie you sound sceptical about this persons' suggestion, and I would be too. What is the purpose of the support site? That's perhaps a daft question but presumably it's primarily to support customers with the effects of lowering support costs, increasing renewals or repeat sales or whatever? Or is it to add content for SEO purposes. Either way I wouldn't use a new domain. For usability I would put the support section on the same domain (in a folder) or a sub-domain For SEO I would put it on the same domain, both to earn any incoming links for your primary sales domain, and also to avoid a discrete 'support site' outranking the main one on any brand or product name searches. I can't think of a single brand or company that uses a separate domain for support, which is often a good indicator of whether something is a good idea Michael

  • I usually start link building by reaching out to people I know that own websites/blogs, and asking for a link. I will also do some submissions to niche/local directories. Then it's time to buckle down and come up with a contact list/link building strategy for your particular niche. Here is a great list of link building ideas: http://pointblankseo.com/link-building-strategies

  • Glad I could help! Check out the Whitespark Local Citation Finder, if you haven't already - it's pretty awesome... Another few non-link related things that will be a big help for local search optimization: Also, make sure you get their Google+ Local pages claimed and optimized. Work hard on a review strategy so they can start acquiring positive reviews. If you're brave, you can try merging their G+ Local page with their G+ Business page - then you've got an integrated maps/social presence, which can lead to some cool things... also, you can set up Google Authorship, so that the business owner's photo shows up next to their listings, which can help click-throughs.

  • But why would they rank the page lower than the home page was ranked if they think it is more relevant?  And the linking is something that needs to be worked on.  Up to this point there has not been much done.  We are doing more social now though and that should help a little.

  • As mentioned below, I'm in a similar position: My understanding is that User/XML site maps are an issue only if you're not getting all your pages crawled. Also, if there were an issue about anchor-heavy inbound text, would there not be a message in Google Webmaster Tools?

  • Do you know what is the effect on a site that uses another site's infographic in a story or post, The answer depends upon the quality of the story or the post. what is the effect on the site producing and storing the graphic? If the site that uses the infographic is a stronger site then it will probably outrank the source of the infographic if they are optimized for the same keyword. If the site that uses the infographic has 1000x as many visitors it will probably attract 1000x as many likes, links, tweets, etc... and thus outrank the site that produced the infographic. No wonder little sites complain about the big brands beating them all of the time... they give away all of their content and wonder WTF happened.

  • I pretty much tried it, I guess I shall wait a little longer for his reply. If none is given, I will disavow his link I guess. Thanks everyone !

  • Agreed, the best links are the ones that are hardest to go after. Find high authority blogs in your niche, and reach out to them personally.

  • check out the help page here: http://www.seomoz.org/help/open-site-explorer-faq is your site new? that could be a factor... OSE isn't going to show EVERY link - and keep in mind, if you have about 150 links showing in WMT, it's possible that those are from less than 50 unique domains... but even if not, if none of the sites linking to you are sites that get crawled by OSE, then your site won't show any link data. (so if you're not linked to by one of the URLs it uses, which is only about 25% of the URLs in Google's index, you won't show link data) also, I noticed that you're don't have a 301 in place for your non-www version of your URL - you need to get that in place, it's important to avoid them being seen as separate sites.

  • Hi Propertyhunter, I recommend that you only approve pingbacks from websites you trust. Use SEOmoz tools to determine a site's Mozrank/Domain Authority, and I agree that you should delete pingbacks from your own domain. Using a related pages plugin is a better choice for inter-linking your content. Hope this helps! Chris

  • If you don't overuse "manipulative" anchor text (such as exact match keywords) and don't have these links site-wide, but on a select few pages, then they'll be absolutely fine. If you think as well, if you've worked with these companies and they've been happy with your work, it is only natural for them to want to link to you in a sort of testimonial page. However, If the link appears site-wide and in the footer, such as "Designed by LinkedCompanyName", then that could certainly trigger a penguin penalty.
