  • There is no SEO benefit offered by using the title property for images. I did forget to mention the file name as a factor as well. Provide your images with descriptive titles such as craftsman-wrench.jpg instead of image344213.jpg.

  • Yes, just noticed this also. I'm sure the guys who work on Wiki & the likes of the BBC, The Guardian are not just using this method for the sake of it, very interesting indeed. Although noticed NYTimes user underlines

  • @Dan, yes that is my thinking. The page ranks as #2 for "Huntsman Advanced Materials (Araldite), Gurit High Modulus (SP)" and then #1 spot is the home page of the site which also contains the phrase. Basically the page is indexed and exists but since it had no links to it, the PR was the absolute lowest possible. @Michael, it is a best practice to always use lowercase letters in URLs. I notice the page URL you originally shared is all lowercase, but your sitemap capitalizes various URLs such as http://www.cgcomposites.com.au/Composite-Material.html From an SEO standpoint there is an issue on your site where all forms of capitalized URLs are valid on your site and return a 200 (OK) Header response. http://www.cgcomposites.com.au/composite-material.html http://www.cgcomposites.com.au/Composite-Material.html http://www.cgcomposites.com.au/COMposite-Material.html The above 3 URLs all work. They shouldn't. It is another issue which should be fixed. Lastly, adding the HTML Sitemap to your footer is a good step, but ideally you should have a better link to your /composite-material page. You can link from your navigation, your sidebar "Product Range" block, or an anchor link within your text.

  • Make sure if the url structure has changes from the old structure to the new structure that you have all the correct 301 re directs mapped out. Also track on site errors on the new site too make sure any errors are fixed with the correct re directs. Also try and keep titles the same where possible too imo..

  • Cheers Ryan, That's kind of what I suspected - most of the best practice things that also affect SEO in some way (alt tags etc) we're already doing, and we were going to put together a press release highlighting the extra accessibility lengths we've gone to that will hopefully get a bit of attention. So as long as I'm not missing anything, that's cool!

  • There is of course a difference between hiding text and being user friendly. If you read Google's policy on hidden text, you'll see there is no mention of this method. The link isn't downsized to 1px, nor is it impossible to see for humans. So I don't agree Erica, on this instance That would be totally different if we'd do this with more text than just one (brand name) word, reducing visibility, placing [Viagra-text] behind the logo/image that has nothing to do with viagra, etc

  • Small note: You don't get link juice from email links. Just traffic if they click.

  • Great input -- and #2 is exactly what we are planning. This all came up because of User Experience and I wanted to confirm we were not missing anything from the on-site technical seo end. Really we're talking about a different product that has the same price and possibly some of the same images and specs. Thanks!

  • Try blekko.com and use /domainduptext behind yourdomain.com

  • Thanks everyone. This was very helpful. I will NOT include the state abbreviation. Ryan - I have an uppercase letter in every word. I will go ahead and format everything so that only lowercase letters are used. Thanks!

  • Hi Falcopa, The concept of "optimization" is fluid. You cannot optimize for 5 terms. Any work you do to optimize for terms #2/3/4/5 detract from the optimization of term #1. I'll share one example as it applies to the title. The most perfectly optimized title for ranking a page discussing diet cheese would be..."Diet Cheese". You can add additional terms to the title to help optimize your CTR such as "Diet Cheese Facts" or "Losing Weight with Diet Cheese". If you change your title from "Diet Cheese" to "Diet Cheese and Swiss Cheese" then you have lose 50% of the ranking weight from Diet Cheese and shared it with Swiss Cheese". Additionally, the terms at the beginning of the title have more weight so it might be more like a 60/ 40 split. You cannot optimize for Swiss Cheese without weakening Diet Cheese. Does this make sense? With respect to the onpage report, for a given keyword, any page can be graded. The report should only be run on the one or two keywords which is the focus of the page. As described above, you cannot be an "A" on 5 terms. The clear direction for you is to create new pages. Best of luck.

  • I'd say it has a negative effect on SEO as SEO is also to do with user experience. moneysavingexpert.com used to have a pop-up that appeared just after the site loaded and blacked out the whole of the rest of the screen - I found it hugely annoying; just as I'd started to read the content it disappeared and I had to close something to continue reading. If I didn't already know the site was genuine I would have thought it was dodgy and pressed back or close straight away. I'm not 100% sure but I think it was the owner of daniweb.com who said she introduced something similar to encourage people to sign up to her forum. Her bounce rate increased dramatically so she took it off as soon as she realised, and the bounce rate recovered. Bounce rate is something that can be measured by the search engines, along with other metrics related to user experience that will be taken into account when calculating the ranking of a page. Alan's idea, to do something more subtle, is a good one. If it was unique and done really well, you might even get extra links because of it, rather than potentially less links as Matt Cutts suggested in the video Ryan linked to.

  • A 3rd option would be to go live soon, but only with products that have the new unique content created. Then add products as the new descriptions are complete.

  • Hi Ryan / Ramp, Yes, I think so also, and watching that video from Matt Cutts confirmed that, it just makes sense plus it looks nice So /conditions/allergies/food/ it is, now i can concentrate on producing great content. Thanks again
