  • I agree with you Neil.  Design the navigation for the user, not a search engine.  It makes more sense to have simply "pricing" then to try and chase the algorithm and include some keywords like "web design pricing".  Furthermore, the added benefit of using a navigation like that really would be negligible. Internal links can help your site, but I think it would be better to use the text around the site as you say, rather than the navigation, in order to utilise these.  The navigation is more for the user than the Google crawler and thus should be designed for the user. Just my 2p!

  • dies this mean i need to go through each of their pages? i was looking for something that would go through all of their pages at once and check for how many times 5 specific key words appear in their pages. do you know anything like that?

  • My host doesn't give me iis access but said they would set them up for me if I give them a list. I think it is time to change hosts! Thanks for your advice!

  • In regards to the bold tags, I don't recall reading anything about having too many bold tags will lower your ranking or affect your ranking.  However, having too many bold tags might cause bad user experiences though.

  • I am having this same issue. There are plenty of links on my website to other pages of my website, but I am only getting 1... I thought it might be because my links are in a spry menu, but I have some bottom links that are normal links. http://www.photogbykelly.com I am the business owner/Photographer/Editor/Webmaster... I did not go to school for HTML (except for one basic class) if you know what I'm doing wrong, can you explain in laments terms? The hosting co I use is BlueHost. Thanks Kelly

  • yes. Your goal is to keep those pages from getting buried in the subdirectories. So based on your service areas, I would go /london, /brighton etc. etc.

  • Thank you, Colin. No, I don't care about passing rank to the clients. Yes, the rest of the site is real content. I appreciate your thoughts!

  • It would only be bad if the home page and category page are almost identical.  If the page products are 90% identical to both the home and category page, then yes this is duplicate.  But if you just have a few scattered products on the home page that happen to be somewhere else, you should be fine.  All ecommerce stores deal with a similar situation as you, I think if Google were to ban sites that display a product on different pages nobody would rank.  Just make sure that each page has enough unique products on it.

  • My bad.  I thought since you said it was a full-time job for you that money was somehow involved.

  • Thanks for the response, Dana. I feel like if I'm more specific I will be a lot more clear. We are an e commerce site that sells trash bags, recycling bags, contractor bags etc. When the site was built (7 years ago) the entire site used the word "garbage bags".  Now we are trying to incorporate the word "trash bag" but so far the rankings for trash bags and garbage bags are dropping lower and lower... Do you think that's because we are targeting more keywords and it's causing a drop in our original rankings?

  • Tina, Great question...of course it matters on the social media platform and the link you have.  For example, I'm sure a New York Times link would give you more value than a link on Manta.com, however a link from buymylinks.com would get less value than a Google+ link. You also need to remember that a lot of these social media channels are currently blocked by the search bots as well as most social media accounts are no-follow, but this doesn't mean that you should give up social. entirely.  A lot of people still use social media and high follower counts and URL's can sometimes be crawled by the Google bots.  Also if you've shared an article, link, or story on G+ more than likely if you have strong authorship and a high level of interaction your update will show up in the search engines.

  • Very helpful answer thanks (even though it wasn;t me who asked the question!).  If a forum allows lots of low quality dofollow backlinks, e.g. in signatures, would they be penalised?

  • Hi Emma, I believe something might be wrong with the Tool.  Although you said you've done so but it doesn't seem to be working.  All the title tags for the blog are still the same.  Might you be able to switch to use a new tool or contact the webmaster or person that created the website?

  • Not that I can see no. When I go to the 'categories'  tab within the GD star rating settings I can see all the categories but next to each one it says 'no multi set assigned'. I have created a multi set but how do I assign it to the categories?

  • It must be done! You need to figure out which page has more PR by using Google PR Tool and SeoMoz PA Tool and I would 301 redirect the page with less PA/PR into the page with the higher PA/PR. If both pages are relatively equal, i would drop the index.html if all pages that link to the home page internally will also drop the index.html from their link. Also, you need to review what your best external links out there and see which version of the home page they are linking to to make this decision. The combined PR/PA of the two home pages should be greater then any one individual home page but a 301 doesn't always carry over all the page juice.
