I think Google automatically learns from the way people link to certain words, surrounding text, linking site's anchor text and surrounding text and so on. Think Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Optimisation and so on. So yes, I would say they learn things. I have seen rankings for Wholesale keywords coming in without using wholesale anywhere. Same thing for Discount/Cheap and so on. I hope that helps.
