That's good advice! Your campaign will re-crawl after 7 days default. You should use tool http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/crawl-test to crawl again and see your results!

You could also try changing the 404  Not found status code to 410 Gone status code - The requested resource is no longer available at the server - a permanent condition, meaning the content is gone and will not be replaced, while 404 means that the content is temporary gone (404 pages will eventually be removed from the index but after some time) You can also try to make a list of all your deleted pages and disallow them from the file robots.txt. You can easily download the list from the Webmasters Tools, crawl errors report - you will receive an alert after Google finds your 404 pages Hope this helps!
