Service name differs from our URL
Can you have newengland.theaterclub.com redirect to boston.theaterclub.com? Or at least no one else is going to use newengland.theaterclub? Those urls are long enough that no one is likely to be just typing them in, so that's probably not your biggest hurdle. And most people searching for theater tickets in New England will be looking more specifically [I live in New England] and Boston is likely your biggest target anyway. So, ideally your url should match your other naming, but in this context I wouldn't make changing it your first priority. [I mean the Foxborough Patriots are managing to get by using a more general name...]

Unpublishing content question
We yanked a whole bunch more content than that over the last few months.. blog posts that no longer got much traffic and had never really gotten any traction, articles covering topics we'd covered better multiple times, etc. If they were still drawing some traffic, we set up a 301. If there wasn't much of anything happening, we just let it 404. We haven't seen any negative impact from this so far. I like EGOL's idea of having someone rewrite the content on those pages. If you can't get that done quickly enough to satisfy Mr. Disgruntled, set up some 302s until the new content is ready. I'd also say that it's probably not worth rewriting unless you're planning to do it better than it was the first time around. If you can't blow it out and make it more valuable, then 301 or 404, whatever, either is probably just fine to wash your hands of it and walk away. Stressing out over one half of one percent when it's not delivering results in the first place isn't going to be worth my time, not when I could be spending that time and effort on something more profitable. Opportunity costs apply.

Location in URLs question
Hi, I do not think it will hurt your SEO as the primary city of the story is "Denver" and it's ranking well there. You can put up a small editorial note on the top like Moz does to show people it is primarily related to Denver and how it applies to other cities or you can use cities breadcrumbs in URLs. Hope this helps! Umar

SEO value of article title content?
Hi there I would take a look at the best practices for title tags. Your title tag should be a mix of what users are actually searching for and editorial language for click throughs. Personally, I would just include the title, category (only if it adds value), and brand. You can include the date in the article itself. Just be mindful of length. Can you give examples of the categories? Let me know. Hope this helps a bit! Good luck!

SEO value of a 'Most Popular Stories' widget?
At Moz, we've considered using one to better serve our content. Many allow you to "buy out" the ads and only show your own content.

Does the Google News 'Editor's Picks' benefit SEO?
The latter, Google News is quite different from normal SEO in the sense that it won't help you usually rank better in organic search. Although in the long run you could benefit from it as more people see your content and you could get links through it.

Best practice to prevent pages from being indexed?
Isn't the main question: Why do you have duplicate pages, are these essentials - the easiest option would be to remove them. But in terms of whats the best option, here is a great article from Moz: http://moz.com/learn/seo/robotstxt I would read that and decide based on your websites and situation the option best suits you. In my opinion I would suggest:

Search box within search results question
Depending on how long ago it was that you added the search box feature, it could very well be that Google's recently swept one site but not the other. As that's something more or less out of your control, I suggest looking through the code for the in-SERP search box and making sure that it's 100% accurate. Other than these things, I can't think of any reason why the search box wouldn't be on one but the other. Hope that helps!

Duplicate content question
Sounds like your index page is most helpful for users to see all your videos than for Google and other search engines. I'd either figure out a way for your index page to be less duplicate content or just de-index. I'd imagine that most searches which land a user to your site are going to be for specific videos, not general videos made by your brand. The latter group of folks will likely land on your homepage.

Value in creating an 'All listings' sitemap?
Thank you for your answer. How would you envision a sitemap for show listings functioning?

Internal links question
There were two initial reasons for the 100 link "rule." 1. Google's crawl budget was limited 2. Each page has a given amount of authority it is able to pass on to internal pages. Less links means more authority for each link. The first part is out the door now. Google has plenty of crawl budget for most sites, and will give plenty if your huge website has enough authority. So, the problem that you need to evaluate is if you are spreading your authority too thinly across all of these pages. Would you be better off limiting it to certain categories, or are you going to be a rock star at link building, and don't need to care? After you consider that you will want to consider your users. Are you giving them too many options, and causing choice overload? Test different options, and see what performs better. There is a Ted talk about Choice Overload that used jelly as an example. One test had over 20 jellies to choose from, and one had around 6. At the end of the day people were more likely to actually buy the jelly when there were only 6 options. What the study determined was that having too many choices overwhelmed shoppers, and led to less sales. Moral of the story, don't give people too much jelly.

Is there a benefit in buying re-directed domains?
I would not purchase a domain just to immediately redirect it, no. If it was me, I would set up a highly focused landing page on the domain, or a mini-site full of information related to the domain that then links out to your main site. Just buying up domains hoping someone will type it in and be redirected will not work. As a stand-alone redirected domain there is little value UNLESS it was a high-ranking high authority domain before you redirected it, at which point there can be some SEO value. If you choose to go the landing page route, here is a pretty nice guide. Super awesome link

Slug best practices?
I don't see that much differences in the URL structure of Hollywood Life and TMZ, their editors just chose the short or shorter variant for their news story (in most cases they don't have to worry about SEO). The Washington post is a pity as they have to add a couple of extra directories in their URL structure.

Page title and slug as complements to one another?
They don't have a specific algorithm for it, but best practice is to keep them as short as possible. When you build your slugs ask yourself if a searcher could guess what this page is about based on the shorter slug. If they probably couldn't, then you would probably want add as little as possible so they could guess it. The title should effectively communicate it, and the slug should reflect it. Also, remember that the rules for titles is even shorter with one of Google's recent updates with larger titles in the SERPs.

Wikipedia and Domain Authority?
I was actually recently asked about a Wikipedia page for our company as well. We currently have a fairly strong brand but our domain authority is only 32/100 and we only have links coming in from 73 different domains(822 total links). Should we hold off on a Wikipedia page for the reasons outlined above? Also, I should add that somebody did try to create one recently but it was deleted by Wikipedia.

Slug construction question
"theatermania.com/broadway/news/06-2014/[slug]" Sounds like you are using Wordpress for the site. I would set it as simple as possible, and not inlcude any info but what you want to rank. You can add broadway into the URL structure, since you can do custom URL's. No need for it to be its own category, unless that is a big category on your site. I personally like this one "holler-if-you-hear-me-opens-on-broadway" since it includes everything but tupacs name, which I would include
