What could have caused Total links to drop from 860,000 to 93,127 in Open Site Explorer?
Hi there, Thanks for reaching out! My name is Erin, and I'm on the Moz Help Team. This is a tricky thing to troubleshoot since we don't have a historical database for our Index, and to my knowledge we haven't changed anything about the way we gather/report this information. Sorry I can't do more for you on the support side with this one! While I can tell you how we gather the data, ideas as to why a drop like this would occur is outside of my scope of expertise. Presashop might have a good starting point for your investigation though! I'll leave this questions as "unanswered" on my side so more folks from the community can chime in if they have any other insights. Good Luck, and Happy Tuesday! Erin

Effect of 301 redirect to a relative url to homepage?
Hi Alex, From the looks of it, there seems to be a lot of 301 redirects going around. As far as I am aware 301 redirects dont always pass 100% of the weight accross to the new URLs. There is some sort of decay factor involved. There also seems to be the case of the main links to the site passing through two 301 redirects. This is possibly one of the causes of drop in site strength. What may be worth considering is checking how many links point to the main URL, rather than links into the redirected URLs. Was the site fine before the 301 redirects were implemented? Ben

"If a company has multiple practice areas, are there any advantages to having specialized local listings for each specific practice area?"
I consider great, include all addresses in the separate accounts Places. Always perform this procedure and brings good results. The important thing is to set the right places. Including as much information as possible.

Backlinks using Open Site Explorer
With OSE you're going to get truncated data if a given domain has more than 25 links from it. It does this to show better diversity with its results. I don't know if there is any way around it. If there is, someone please tell me I always find that if I set it to - Show "All" links from "External Pages Only" to "All Pages on the Root Domain" then I can get some pretty good data. I think this would work for what you need it for. Maybe you could use the SEOMoz API to gather the data you need.
