Technically, there no set field length generally speaking depending on what you're using them for. A Google snippet truncates anything over 156 characters though in most situations.  What you put in the description COULD be used by their system to evaluate meaning though. I would also say this - if the description "feels" like it's too long from a readability perspective, it's likely that you're not only not helping anything, and you could possibly be sending either diluted topical signals or worst case, signals that you're attempting to game the system. There is no "easy" way to build links. We all wish there was an easy way to build links, and I am sure you are looking at all the blogs on the web wondering how on earth you can get on one. My best suggestion is if you don't like writing is to outsource some of your content writing. There are tons of freelance sites out there with good writers. Then simply think of a good topic to write on. It might cost you a few bucks each article, but for me it is so worth it. Then all you need to do is go to http://myblogguest.com/ and find a blog to post your article on. It's not very hard. So using this process it is not very time consuming and I would say fairly cost effective.
