I'd implement canonical tags for your duplicate content problem instead of noindex tags. This is the recommended practice for duplicate content. As far as pages that you don't want indexed, when you use robots.txt to accomplish this, Google can/will still put the URL & title in SERPS. In order to stop this, you do need to put meta noindex tags on every page.

Hi Devin, many thanks for your reply. It does very much sense of what you are saying and you are right most competitors don't even have widgets in title. Good example Google is google not best search results.com I think I might go for it because it will bug me for years if I dont change it because all the long tails is all plural...ie cheap blue widgets rather then blue widget.... Is there an alternative to 301 what I planned to do is redirect each product to the new product so done correctly or is there a better way.. Many thanks again

Hi Sonja, It sounds like you are referring to issues with pagination within your site. The rel=next and rel=previous tags were recently made available to address this situation. Hi Guys, many thanks for answering so quickly. Gianluca what you say make absolute sense to me I thought it was strange that 120 links is a real problem but I think I did not make it clear enough of what I want to do  - I would never want to delete the pictures. Imagine a shopping site on our site there is a product picture a customer can click on that to get to the product - then there is the the title underneath..that is also clickable....and then it says details also a link to the product so I'm thinking of removing the detail link and leaving the rest - Hope that makes sense Dru many thanks for your response - I though you were right about the breadcrumb but to be honest I really dont understand the canonical url issue and I read that it should not be used too much. I have another question open about this issue so I really dont want to add more. But thanks anyway for taking time to reply. kind regards Sonja

What you are describing sounds perfect. Just to be clear I'll offer an example. Let's say you are selling boxes of Cheerios: URL1 = mysite.com/productxyzpdq URL2= mysite.com/cheerios Both URLs present the exact same, or almost the same content. The proper adjustment is to add a canonical tag to both pages: What you are doing is communicating to search engines "hey, if you want to index this page, always use the canonical URL even if it doesn't match the page's actual URL. Both this page the canonical page offer essentially the same content."
