Make a LinkedIN group centered around your product/products chain and don't promote your business, just talk about Marketing and SEO tactics, be friendly. Just of the top of my head, get a expert in the field to answer questins on the forum for a night. If you dont have many users, aim low to start with. Once you get a bit happaning then you will gain links from people linking to posts.

Where to start on building links for a news website? Should I focus on promoting individual articles or create linkbait and create friends with influencial bloggers/editors/ and news websites in the same niche?
Vich, SEO is an all round issue - both link bait (which will attract links) and link building (you actively pursuing links). To get you off the ground I'd recommend some of the latter. Look at writing a couple of informative articles, creating some strong profiles on 'web 2.0' sites link Hub Pages and Squidoo.
