Interesting question Eric. One of the first things I'd do is write up a professional press release to announce the partnership and post it on your partner's site. This way, you get a nice contextual link from the newspaper. And if your partnership ever goes sour, you'll always have that link. Onto your question: I'd say go simple, like the Simply Hired example. Remember: after the first link, links from the same domain aren't as powerful. So you're goal should be to maximize the partner links for traffic and funneling PR...which a simple image link can do.

Hi Johan, What I understand from your question: You are linking articles/news pages from your home page to attract traffic to those pages( to complete article). Am I right ? If you this is the case, You don't have to do anything. Check home page of seomoz.org, they are linking to latest blogpost from home page. Correct me if I misunderstood your question ?

Matthew, How would you go about tracking user vs bot traffic on 410 header pages? We see that we got plenty of hits on the pages via Awstats, but no means to measure what sort of traffic these hits really are? Best Johan
