How do retailers phase out short term promotional pages for best SEO?
The guys all have some great thoughts here. One more thought: If a promotion or product is usually short-lived but comes back intermittently (e.g. once a year, twice a year, etc.), the URL can be kept live. A good example is rental real estate in a big city - the properties will come back on the market, but the URLs need to show visitors that the apartment is not available at the moment. RIghtmove (real estate in the UK) does this with rentals it knows will come back on the market, e.g. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-21907128.html They re-use the pages when the property is live again - I've seen them do it with both flats I lived in, and they rank remarkably well. Questionable usability if a page ranks and is actually unavailable, but effective. Clearly this is only relevant if you will re-use / open these short-term promotions in the future.

What is the best way to handle links that lead to a 404 page
Hi, Definitely don't use disavow unless you think that the links are poor quality and could harm your site, or are actively harming it right now. That is what disavow is for, not for removing your 404 pages. There is no harm waiting for Google to remove the 404 pages on its own, especially if you have used its URL removal tool as well. If there are any good links in the backlink profile of the 404ing pages, do attempt to contact the webmaster and have them changed - most people are more than happy to do this.

Adding Keywords to rank tracker
Hi Katherine, Are you trying to add keywords in the Rank Tracker tool or within your campaigns? I ask because the answer is different between the two sections and the original Q&A post was titled with "Rank Tracker" but was actually about the campaigns. For the Rank Tracker tool, we currently don't offer bulk uploads I'm afraid. In your campaigns, you can use the left side navigation to go to Search>Keyword Rankings>Add & Manage Keywords and then add your bulk list of keywords from the Add Keywords tab there. Here is a screenshot with that navigation highlighted. Here is a link to the Ass & Manage Keywords section of our Help Hub for your reference, as well. I hope this helps! Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

High level rel=canonical conceptual question
Yes, if you redirect URL B, it will not be indexed as content. It will be ignored by Google. Well... Not ignored, but Google will acknowledge the URL B shouldn't be indexed.
