Geographic site clones and duplicate content penalties
Well I maybe biased because this is what I wanted to hear but personally I think spot on, particularly the Kissmetrics article from a later response. I have set geo-targeting already and will also sort the HREFLANG tags. I plan to leave both sites on .com domains - In the UK .com's are just as 'normal' as .co.uk's. All content has been updated to US english and with specific relevant info so I think it's just down to the usual link building and adding content to get it to rank. I genuinely appreciate all the responses, fantastically useful, thank you! Mat

Establishing if links are 'nofollow'
If you mean links to your site from some URL not on your site then you could do the following: Do a site:somesite.com/page to see if it is indexed, plus try and find in results Check the URL to you is clean - no redirects, no js, no frame etc Check their URL in OSE to see if there is any authority. Otherwise if Google is not blocked from the other URL and there is no no-follow links on the page then Google is not instructed to no-follow. Therefore a small amount of link equity will pass - unless made negligible by The page authority is very poor there are multiple links on the page

Lower quality new domain link vs higher quality repeat domain link
I would forget about Domain Authority -- it's about as useful as PageRank. On which of those two sites should you get links? The one that is more prominently read among your target audience. If I have a website about basketball, I'd prefer a link from another big basketball site with a DA of 20 over a site on, say, cooking that may have a DA of 60. In the age of "earning" links, the best links comes as natural by-products of just doing good marketing and public relations. And involves the process (which I outline here and here on Moz) of KPI setting, audience identification and research, messaging and positioning, channel research, content creation, and campaign execution. Do this process well over and over again forever, and the best links will come your way without you even needing to think about it.
