Google Analytics - Custom Variables
Hi Mark, Have you considered using Google Experiments in Google Analytics to test the pages? You can test variations of pages and their effectiveness by simply entering the different URLs - https://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1745147&topic=1745207 (Experiments is under the Content Menu in Google Analytics) If you want to go down the custom variable route here is a great how to that should explain it all simply for you (I used it myself) - http://www.sitepoint.com/google-analytics-custom-variables/ What are you going to be measuring, in terms of performance, in order to be able to judge which page type has been more successful? The reason I ask is because I am trying to understand how you will define one page type performing better than another.

An Easy Question - Backlinks
I really wouldn't worry about these links, I don't think these are going to harm your backlink profile. Instead of spending time getting these removed I'd spend the time looking for good quality, relevant links. No point wasting your time on these or incurring the risk changing your backlink profile...

Determine the best URL structure
I would recommend using a similar URL structure as http://www.domain.ie/rentals/location/property-to-let/ When on the site you are working on you can see that there are three main solutions - sales, lettings and sharing. I would have www.yourdomain.ie/sales and then follow this with location and then property. This would be a good organised architecture. An example URL would be: http://www.yourdomain.ie/lettings/dublin-city/property-to-let/?min-price=500&max-price=700 You would also need to use rel="canonical" in order to prevent duplicate content issues.

Canonicalization - Some advice needed :)
Seems like Matt and Marcus have you on the right track. With a real-estate site, duplicates and near-duplicates are very common, since you're adding and removing properties all the time and there are many search options and categories. I do agree that search-friendly URLs, long-term, where each property has a fixed URL, are definitely the best bet. In the meantime, though, a solid canonical structure helps a lot. Ease into it - don't go sitewide in one fell swoop without a plan, unless you're having clear ranking problems. Start with your biggest problem areas, monitor/measure, and work from there. You can always check for indexed duplicates by running a Google search like: site:daft.ie intitle:"176 Rathgar Road" In this case, I'm not seeing any index issues, although I think Matt's concerns are valid. I'd also consider rel=prev/next for search results pages, as that can help focus Google, too. Again, take it one step at a time and start with the biggest problems. It'll mitigate your risk all around.
