Thank you for the reminder! I believe these have all been switched over, but I'll give it another look to be sure! Kaylie

Significant Drop in Rankings without Explanation
Wanted to add one more thing. Grrr....Q&A is being buggy for me today...just typed a bunch and then lost it. You could go after duplicates by filing DMCA takedown requests but it is likely more hassle than it is worth. Also, to help you build content that outshines your competitors, this may help. When my husband was buying our Rancillo he did a pile of online research. He ended up spending most of his time on Youtube watching videos of how each machine worked. If you can provide information that people can't get on other sites then Google will like you, visitors will stay longer and you will probably sell more machines.

Massive Increase in 404 Errors in GWT
I'm just cynical enough to suspect this may be a byproduct of Google Webmaster Tools recent inbound link meltdown. Huge numbers of GWT users are reporting that their inbound link reports have basically lost most of their links. What if, in dealing with the problem, Google has gone back to an older version of the links database, which might recover more of the recent links, but also pull back a whack of those links it already discounted? This is pure speculation on my part, but there's been so much volatility on Google's link reporting recently that I can't say I trust the data as far as I can toss it at the moment. Have you tired a similar comparison to the data shown in Bing Webmaster Tools? I'm sure I read of others encountering what you're talking about recently. Will see if I can find the references in case they found anything. Paul

GWT, URL Parameters, and Magento
Thanks! I have decided to do this and am turning off a few parameters at a time to ensure it doesn't cause any crawling or indexing issues.

Magento: URLs for Products in Multiple Categories
Someone else asked a similar question earlier today. Canonicals are the key if you want to keep the category structure in your product URLs. Surely you'd want the book title and author name in the product name / URL and wouldn't need it from the category URL though? Either way, we use this extension on our Magento shop which lets us control the Canonical URLs properly as well as generating some good google friendly sitemaps. http://www.mageworx.com/seo-suite... Hope this helps, James

Retail Site and Internal Linking Best Practices
Hi Mat, I encountered myself the same issue and wondered what you thought... I run an e-commerce website. There was a point where I saw a keyword that is somehow related to my site but I knew that it would have low percentage to convert. I decided to try and added an article about it. It got me on first page for two keywords (positions 3 and 7) that are exact searched about 420,000 times (which is much more than all of my main subjects together...). The article is very good and informative - I have 80% bounce and average time on page of over 2 minutes. Meaning people are coming, reading and then most of them are leaving. By the way, I have an outgoing link there to a more related site assuming that I rather have them going out through me than back to Google. Is that a good thing or I should stay away from these type of articles?

Tips for Moving to Magento
Hi Kaylie, For any migration you need to develop a plan for SEO. There are a lot of tips out there i.e. https://seogadget.co.uk/surviving-seo-site-migration/, however you must make sure you correctly map out all URLs and redirect them if needed, The one major tip I can give you when working with Magento and all ecommerce sites, is that you make sure to fix all duplication and canonical issues. Increasing the quality of the site will reflect well in the sites user experience and visibility (in terms of how it is indexed) in search. Great guide from Joost - http://yoast.com/articles/magento-seo/ I would also strongly suggest and purchase this extension - http://www.mageworx.com/seo-suite-ultimate-magento-extension.html. They will install this on your site for you. This should also deal with alot of the duplication issues. Other quick tips to increase your sites visibility using magento (depending on the size of your site): Segment your XML sitemaps. Also create an image sitemap to generate additional traffic to the site. Make sure you have your product rss feeds accessible for both search engines and users. Reduce the number of internal links per page as possible. Hope this helps, Vahe

Content Tabs and Keyword Stuffing
I've found most copywriters understand density well enough to get it. It would help to give them a short primer on semantic relationships and search. Use specific examples and the ~ operator in Google. Explain something like how auto relates to car but auto service and car service mean totally different things.
