My biggest competitors have a much ldata number of links than me but having looked at there link profiles I think 50% of them are a bit dodgy and I have a nice clean if a bit sparce link profile yet I seem to be the one stuck behind. My content was the issue but it has been getting much better. Still ont great but better than my competitors. I hope the next updates help me but I assume I will get messed up by google again! Lol.

Next big Google update. Andy ideas when?
I'm interested to find out if anyone has and idea of when it will be or good guesses I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
I have put a big effort into an SEO upgrade on my site and I'm interested in what impact I can expect when the next big update comes. Assuming I have fixed the issues that had been causing my traffic drop.

RE: To many links on page. Big or small issue for eCommerce
thats really helpful thanks.
ill have a think about the about us link. Its a design V usability issue and i cant decide in this case which should win. I like to keep things as clean as possible.
content and blogs wise we have mountains to do but we are working on it and i'm in the process of recruiting bloggers and more writers but its hard to get quality writers with specialist equestrian knowledge. If you get a good writer with no horse background they stand out like a sore thumb!
I plan to rewrite the about us and faqs to optimise them more effectively, this will include adding details and length.
Thanks again for the advice. Been running fast into the SEO darkness and i have not been 100% sure it was in the correct direction so your comments give me a bit more confidence to keep going! thanks.

RE: To many links on page. Big or small issue for eCommerce
I have already fallen for and now repairing the nofollow issues on my site.
I have a top drop down nav and a sidebar in most of my site. The top Nav has got the primary and secondary cats linkable and the third tear is hidden in the nav script. (I'm not a developer but I believe it's conditional coding that has been used)
Would you mind having a look at my site and letting me known if I should kill the side menu or if I should do something different. (Ignore the nofollows. They are getting removed this week.)
also I need to deal with my footer links. Needs a proper restructure as it has enveloped into s stupid system.
But any advice is very Welcome.
www.centralsaddlery.co.uk is my site.

To many links on page. Big or small issue for eCommerce
On my site I have around 3k pages and about 90 categories. Most of which have a sensible number of products but some have only a few products and some have loads.
if I have say 40 links on the page ignoring the producand is it a big problem if I have more than 60 products on the page? Assuming a link limit per page of 100
user wise we have filters and sorts for thme to find what they breed without issue. But simply from an seo point of view how damaging would I be to have the 23 "to many links on page issues? Worth fixing by making two categories and splitting out products even tho it would hinder the user.

RE: Can't seem to get traffic back post Panda / Penguin. WHY?
We didn't get an instant hit. It was a 50-60% drop spread from aug to end of feb in a pretty steady downward slope. It has been pretty level from feb until now. That's why I'm a bit unsure of the reason for the drop. I havlocal ready cross referenced the google updates and there is a rough coronation between the updates and the start of the declin but nothing concert.

RE: Can't seem to get traffic back post Panda / Penguin. WHY?
I'm not sure exactly but I think it's more Panda as we have not had the best content in the past. If we just keep on slogging through with more content is that the best plan? If so I'm happy to do so. I just need to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. would also like to be sure that everything else a pout our site is as good as can be.

Can't seem to get traffic back post Panda / Penguin. WHY?
I have done and am doing everything I can think of to bring back lost traffic after the late 2012 updates from google hit us. I just is not working.
We had some issues with our out of house web developers which screwed up our site in 2012 and after taking it in house we have Eden doing damage control form months now. We think we have fixed pretty much everything.
- URL structure
- filling up with good unique content(under way. Lots still to do)
- making better category descriptions
- redesigned homepage.
- Updated product pages (CMS is holding things back on that part otherwise they would be better. New CMS under construction)
- started more link building(its a real weak spot on our SEO as far as I can see)
- audited bad links from dodgy irelavent sites.
- hired writers to create content and link bait articles.
- Begun making high quality video's for both YouTube (brand awareness and viral) and on site hosting (link building and conversions) (in the pipeline not online yet).
- Flattened out site architecture.
- optimise internal link flow (got this wrong by using nofollows. In the process of thinking of a better way by reducing nun wanted Nav links on page.)
i realise its not all done but I have been working ever since the drop in traffic and I'm just seeing no increase at all.
I have been asking a few questions on here for the past few days but still can't put my finger on the issue.
Am I just impatient and need to wait on the traffic as I am doing all the correct things? Or have I missed something and need to fix it.
you anyone would like to have a quick look at my site and see if there is an obvious issue I have missed It would be great as I have been tearing my hair out trying to find the issues with my site. It's www.centralsaddlery.co.uk
Criticism would me much appreciated.

RE: Nofollow in site archutecture. Good or bad in 2013?
I think that's answered my question with a resounding no!
Thanks.

RE: Nofollow in site archutecture. Good or bad in 2013?
It was all about link juice flow.
We were also trying to optimize for the user navigation but this created lots of links in the nav. I can't work out how to help user nav without creating loads of links on page.
we have unique but thin content on the site as we are eCommerce. We are working on this but it is taking a lot of time and effort to fill up the site with good quality content.
could the use of nofollow be hurting our rankings?

RE: Nofollow in site archutecture. Good or bad in 2013?
it was for content siloing for keywords but I'm starting to question the advice i was given on the subject.

RE: Nofollow in site archutecture. Good or bad in 2013?
no its not for external links its for the menu system and for internal link flow. just not sure if its a good idea. my site is www.centralsaddlery.co.uk if you want to see what I'm doing

Nofollow in site archutecture. Good or bad in 2013?
We have been using nofollow links to create a silo architecture. is this a good idea or should we stay away from using this on our site. Its an eCommerce site with about 3000+ pages so not sure of the best architecture.
ideas and suggestions on best practice welcome!

RE: Ecommerce site content upgrade timescale.
Thanks
My site is not huge about 3000 pages. We did some architecture upgrades and a bit of a design change and since then Google has hammered us! I cant see any reason for its and have been trying to find the issue and it is just taking ages to bounce back. we are also doing a content upgrade site wide and its having a slight effect but I think it may just be to little over the whole site to have an effect. my site is www.centralsaddlery.co.uk i would love to here any ideas or issues architecture wise. Its a long way of on content and the product pages could be better but we are being held back by an outdated CMS(new CMS is under construction). it just seems like all efforts are failing. if its just time and content that is the issue I can just keep working but i am worried there is a bigger problem lurking in the site architecture.

Ecommerce site content upgrade timescale.
I have been upgrading my sites content and structure and I have been wondering how long I should wait for a traffic increase before I should think it has been a failure and try a new plan of attack?
