Doorway Page? or just a flawed idea?
If I am hearing you correctly, you're basically purchasing a typo domain name? Or one that could potentially infringe on another's digital assets? Seems like a whole lot of work to me.

Is a Z almost as good as an S?
Thanks for your input guys. I will definitely forget the Z option and carry on looking for a non-hyphenated alternative. Since reading your replies and taking on board your advice, I have found a couple of possibile alternatives and I am even considering a domain without the keyword in at all. Sadly, EGOL, buying www.keywordguides.com is probably not an option. The budget for this project is tiny... I guess I am just going to have to be a bit more creative

Is it worth changing urls with underscores?
Ive never seen any benefit proven and certainly wouldn't bother. Here's a short video from Matt Cutts answering just this question

Is allowing comments a good idea?
My content is pretty uncontroversial, so hopefully allowing comments will just allow a bit of useful discussion to happen on each page (fingers crossed...) Being spammed to death was/is one of my main concerns. I will of course use spam filters but, as EGOL suggests, this will still require moderation and therefore my time (which is already in short supply...) I think I will give it a try and see how things go. Thanks for your input guys

Several short articles, or one long one?
I suppose that is true, e-commerce and editorial sites will organize information differently. With e-commerce the last thing you want is to clutter a page with tons of products to make it difficult for users to find exactly what they are looking for. But with editorial sites like wikipedia it would make more sense to have the most comprehensive page you can create.

Links from any country?
If you're already at 90% UK traffic I'd look into diversifying and go after easy fits like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa. Is the site on a UK domain with UK hosting? If so, that will be more of a location signal than links and the major factor in UK boost. Stronger links--from anywhere--will apply to the strength of your site globally, plus the UK. I'd start going after those.
