Just to follow up on this, today the competitor's site has disappeared from Google. Again one up for decency! Glad to see things like this being punished.

It's just that all our pages are given an A for on page content by seoMOZ and have always ranked very well with what I consider to be good content. When this site appeared from nowhere (and it was basically a clone of ours) I presumed and still do that they obtained these rankings purely on their links. Oh well. I just hope they are punished for this

Yeah I had read that, I just wasn't sure why our page was so much lower than the others, especially ones that didn't even seem to have any particularly strong links back from anything that looked particularly authoratitive.
