As a SEO beginner I am still unsure of the best way to build links.

I have a article which I'd like to distribute, I've used sites like ezinearticles.com however I feel this is too general so I've targeted some sites which are associated to the industry. Many of the sites I've discovered charge a hefty fee. Before I take the plunge and spend money (I'm a Yorkshireman) I'd like the thoughts and opinions of SEO experts.

Is this common practice or are there better, more cost effective ways?

It seems when I've added links in directories, with poor domain authorities, it's had a negative impact on my site. I need to target links from higher quality sites and also link to these sites.

I've been adding links to my site on directories, article sites and relevant industry blogs. I've also been given and a budget for Google Ads, which has also increased traffic. In the last week my Keyword positions have risen. However, my domain authority has reduced. I know the most important thing is improving traffic and keywords but I'd like to know how I can improve my domain authority.

What is causing it to reduce and how can I improve it?

I know many of you may see this as cheating but I've been given a Adchoice budget so I'm going to make the most of it!

One problem... where do I begin?
Adwords doesn't seem to have any information about Adchoice and Adsense, as far as I can see, is placing adverts on my site which is not what I want.

I'm relatively new to the SEO world, however, I've landed myself a SEO job for a mobility bath, shower and wetroom company.
I've optimize the pages and added links to directories BUT I would like to start gaining quality links. I've wrote articles, including keyword links, but I would like to know the best strategy to get articles distributed to generic/industry specific sites.  
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
