Hi,

We have decided to segment our products and languages on to different country tlds.

I know how to 301, but I am curious as to how I should actually do this, in what order to do it. Let's call the existing site with all products on OLDsite, and the new tld, where the products will also appear NEWsite.

I am thinking of:

1. Setting up NEWsite, but no sitemap.
2. On launch of NEWsite, 301 all products on OLDsite to NEWsite (they will no longer appear on OLDsite)
3. After some time, add sitemap, google verification in GWT, etc... on NEWsite.

My thinking is that if I launch NEWsite and notify Google it will index the same products and content as OLDsite, and not necessarily check the 301 right? Which could lead to dupe content issues...

Any ideas? We are only redirecting part of the site, so not all of it.

We have an extensive online shop in Magento - to ensure that some of the pages with query strings are not indexed, we implemented a conditional NOINDEX,FOLLOW so that it will stop indexing any pages that have querystrings on it -

We do need to use Canonical also - for other reasons - so my question is:

If you have a page that is NOINDEX,FOLLOW and it has a rel canonical pointing to original, would it transfer that NOINDEX,FOLLOW to the main original page causing it problems?

I'm experiencing some strange behaviour with Google Webmaster Tools.

I noticed that some of our pages from our ecom site were missing start keywords - I created a template for meta titles that uses Manufacturer - Ref Number - Product Name - Online Shop;  all trimmed under 65 chars just in case. To give you an idea, an example meta title looks like:
Weber 522053 - Electric Barbecue Q 140 Grey - Online Shop

The strange behaviour is if I do a "Fetch as Google" in GWT, no problem - I can see it pulls the variables and it's ok. So I click submit to index.

Then I do a google site:URL search, to see what it has indexed, and I see the meta description has changed (so I know it's working), but the meta title has been cut so it looks like this:
Electric Barbecue Q 140 Grey - Online Shop

So I am confused - why would Google cut off some words at start of meta title? Even after the Fetch as Googlebot looks perfectly ok?

I should point out that this method works perfect on our other pages, which are many hundreds - but it's not working on some pages for some weird reason....

Any ideas?

I see that a new wave of domains are to be released soon. We are not talking or 1 or 2 new extensions, but more like 700 new extensions on a TLD level.

Can I find this anywhere in Moz Tools?

Hi,

For example, some of the HTML improvements notices from GWT, says dupe meta descriptions or titles, for pages that have since been 301 redirected or had a canonical tag added.

So, my idea is to force google to read it using "Fetch as Google" - hoping that it will now see 301 redirection or the fix we have implemented.

Does this work? How long does it take? Lastly, should I just click the "fetch as google" or should I also click on the "Submit to index" button?

I am keen to get myself some plus1´s.

Furthermore, I believe that I can curate the process so that they are drip fed to my site, from phone verified accounts, from different IP´s, etc... it could look semi natural.

Of course, I could do it the harder way which would mean asking people to do so in exchange for X. People will not necessarily just plus it for the sake of it.

If we build some quality inbound links to certain pages, that are a later date 301'd to another domain, does any equity or juice get transferred across? Or is the inbound link's value wasted?

Ive had this happen to our site too - using hproduct tags - and they have just dropped completely - no change in our code...

I was thinking of speaking to them about getting a link to our site.

But then I looked at the stats:

Very good answer - and yes, 2 bad choices but limited resources means I must choose one. Either that or Meta NOINDEX the dupes for the moment until they are re-written.

I agree with most of your points - but similarly, wouldn't unique content for each different colour, eg., a content writer to write unique interesting content, would results in 5 potential pages in SERPS as opposed to just 1 ?
