Thank you again! I think it's a great idea—I actually wanted a paragraph on top but others wanted to try it this way first, they thought a really clean page would be most friendly, but maybe we're so used to knowing what the place is about that we forgot others need some orientation with text! I've been researching the sudden drop in rankings and I don't think we did any of the things that could cause it. I'm hoping it's the Google flux thing and will go away. Guess we'll see. of course! so my recommendation would be to inspect the page (with chrome dev tools) and see if it is styled as an H1, and if it isn't styled as a true H1, I would add that as a task to your backlog but I wouldn't suggest that you make it higher priority then other more important ranking factors. That being said, most of these SEO best practice recommendations come from people doing tests and identifying trends, so there is no 100% solid answer that "yes you NEED it to be styled as a true H1" or "no it does not matter at all". My personal opinion is that it still carries some value, so if you can figure it out, I would recommend that you do have it read as a true H1 tag. Even if it does not impact your rankings significantly, I think that your site will be better off following all recommended best practices.

It's worth changing it in my opinion. When I joined my company, they also didn't use H1 tags and essentially used Hx tags as styling tags (which they are not). Even just all the basic on-page SEO has had a very noticeable effect on traffic. That said, if you are working to a deadline, I would say you have to weigh your priorities. Not using correct Hx structure won't kill your SEO, it's just a missed opportunity. So do it, but if it has to wait a while, it's not going to be a massive issue. Changing the styling should be fairly easy. Simply copy the styling used for H2 to H1 and then update your website (template) to use H1 for the main header on each page. H1 and page title don't have to be absolutely identical but it makes sense for them to be fairly similar. So yes, you can use keyword variations, but if they are too different that might make it look spammy - both need to accurately describe the content of the page.
